Hi everyone I have decided to step up and build a big block for my nova for next year. I am going to build a 496 cu in like the one built by Chevy High Performance a few months ago. My question is do I need to use a 4 bolt main block or not. A 2 bolt main was used in the magazine build which they claimed was plenty strong enough. I will be using this motor in a bracket car with a 400 turbo behind it with a trans brake. Any thoughts appreciated  Tom

What kind of HP/torque do you expect to make. In my opinion/ novice experience 2 bolt mains hold up just fine (some people even think they are better than a 4 bolt due to drilling extra holes in the block. I'm not about to go there but unless you are making very high HP ...over 500 hp, I wouldn't lose any sleep. Smile

the engine build Chevy High Performance built  put out  750hp @ 6700rpm so that is why my concern about the 4 bolt.

I ran a 2 bolt block with roughly 6-700hp and had no problems. We also turned that motor to 7000 rpm without problems. However when we tried to go to higher hp by adding nitrous we experienced cap walk. If you are not planning on using N20 I would say you are OK.

I would definitely use some ARP main studs or bolt kit (studs are stronger) for your application.

Good advice, we did use aftermarket studs and rod bolts in our engines.
