About 6 months ago I took my 81 Ton Duelly 4X4 to local shop to have rear water jackets & clutch replaced. They failed to put any antifreeze & water in radiator, nor did they refill transmission w/80-90. I noticed the lack of antifreeze in the few blocks to my house. Only discovered the lack of 80-90 on my way to work when trans locked up. Took to same person to have trans pulled & he left it in 1st gear & took shifter off. Everybody says shifter has to be almost in reverse to get top plate off. And Mine Will Not Come Off!!!! Any ideas how to get top plate off?

bolting the transmission to an engine stand made a huge difference! Put shifter halfway into reverse & cover came right off... Everything came apart & went back together easy. Whats the trick to get cover back on? Figured since shifter was 1/2way into reverse to get cover off I should 1/2 engage reverse gear to get back on... Cover is on & it shifts into all gears but reverse gear always engaged. Thanks for all the links & info!
