Hi their I know you guys see these post all time but I've looked and didn't see anything to help me so hope someone can help me out. I have a chev 350 engine that is out of a 1978 Malibu  and recently I bought a eldlebrock performance rpm intake. Now I'm working on rebuilding it I'd like to get around 500hp and still be road legal can anyone point me in the right direction for what I should get for my motor. Also dose anyone know how many hp my intake would give me

500 hp is possible out of a 350 but you had better be ready to spend a lot of bucks to do it and it will not be a very street friendly motor.

Adding a 200 shot of nitrous is the easiest and cheapest way to achieve the 500 horse power goal.

Take the guesswork out of it and buy a crate engine.

Sounds like one of those guys who thinks a cam and manifold on a 350 gets 500hp. It can be done but as said will be a radical motor. Good street friendly 350 combos are gwnerally 400-425hp.

As long as it's a nitrous manifold, aka plate, it might see 500hp and live IF the tuner really knows what he's doing.

I mild 350/350 then add some juice. Better make sure the rest of the driveline can handle it..

Scott offered a link to Shafirof's 495 horse 402.,. follow his example and shoot for 425 to 450 horse.
Plan on spending $5000.00 to $6000.00

Where have I seen this thread before haha. Hopefully I will be of some assistance seeing as I have a 355. After the numbers were crunched on my motor, the guy who built it determined it would make right at 490-500hp. To build the motor it cost $8000. The cam I'm currently running is as big as it can get to where the car will barely idle. It's not the most friendly street engine but it is incredibly fun and fast. Sounds like a NASCAR when you get on it to... If you have to ask how to get 500hp out of a 350, you're never gonna get their.(without NOS that is)

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and give some generally specific advise.

Have your block fully cleaned & inspected by a qualified machinist. Since this is a street motor and not a serious race motor, you would be well advised to shoot for good lower end & mid range torque instead of upper rpm horsepower.

Tell your machinist what you want but don't tell him 500hp or you're gonna drop 10K without blinking. He will suggest a crank, rods, and pistons to build a solid short block. Shoot for 9.5:1 compression ratio. Any more and you'll have to be a damn good tuner to keep it from detonating itself to death.

You're going to need some goods heads. I like AFRs 180 to 195 heads. Edelbrock's Performer RPM AirGap dual plane intake manifold will be give you good low end torque to get the car moving and feed those hungry inches in the upper rpm range.

Then we get to the cam. There are a million of them to choose from and everyone will give you a different answer on which one will work best for you. IMO, a cam with intake duration @ .050 of 220*-230* will get you horsepower numbers without completely killing your lower end torque. You can cam for torque or you can cam for horsepower. For a street car you have to compromise somewhere in the middle.

The thing to keep in mind is that if the car still has the stock rearend with the stock/factory gear ratio, it'll likely not be optimal for your new engine's power. Same thing holds true for the transmission. You can drop 500hp in the engine bay but if the transmission and rearend aren't able to handle that power you'll be stuck with broken parts and need to drop at least a grand on either to make them hold up.

The first car I built from front to back. Every car since has been built from back to front. Make the rearend beefy enough to handle your expected future improvements first. Then make the transmission beefy enought to handle the future improvements. Do it in this order and you won't be chasing the next weakest link.
