Hi everyone,
New guy here... looking for SBC info and found this forum!
Newbie question here... first car with a carb for me...
I just bought an old Jeep with a Chevy 327 swap. Engine number says it's a 1968 327. The carburetor (obviously not stock) is a Qjet #17087245 that was used on Dodge HD trucks (85 to 88).
Is it ok to use a carb designed for a 360 engine on a 327?
2nd question is regarding alternator position:
Is this setup a custom one? Because I'm not able to adjust belt tension...alternator is touching valve cover... see picture:

Thanks a lot!

Coolspot welcome to CHP:
1.I will do some more research on the Q-Jet, but it if ran the way it is set-up now I would say thats it's Okay. Check the linkage for any binding, and that throttle shaft isn't worn excessively. Someone by the time I'm done doing my research will probably have some information for you.
2.Your Alternator is mounted in the correct place for that circa year 327. The only thing it maybe an externally regulated alternator. That is not a big del with GM alternators. You can go to a bone yard and pick up an alternator of that vintage.
2A.The newer GM alternators are completely different. The type you have by your picture you can clock. So if you do buy one thats not set up exactley like yours. Its and easy enough fix to do. So don't let that stop you from purchasing it. Just remember the older GM is externally regulated.

The carb: the number you posted, 17087245, indicates the original application for that carb was an 87 Buick with federal (49 state) emissions.
The alternator: that looks original to me. On short water pump applications in the early days of the sbc, the alt was mounted just like yours is, on the driver's side. You may need to get a longer upper bracket.
I never heard of Qjets being used on Dodges, not saying it didn't happen, just saying I never heard that before.

At a quick glance I see your heads have: Double Humps, Camel Humps, Fuelie Heads. Whatever you want to call them they are early Hi-Po heads. If you want pull a valve cover and send us the numbers off the heads.
Also early 327's had Steel Cranks. Some are Medium journal, Small journal, and Large journals. The only way to tell is (2) different ways. Forging Number, a give away sometime is the first journal. Thats #1 connecting rods. A forged crank has a very wide or almost NON exsistent parting/line versus A cast crank with a thin or very narrow parting line. Forged # 1130, 2680, 4577, 4672, 3734627, 3782680, 3814671, 3884577, 3914672, 3951130.
NOTE: the 307/327 small block used the same stroke. But are all large journal cranks.# 3911001, 3911011, 3941174,.
You may have a really good engine so be carefull when you take things apart. Don't kick the crank, and block bore. Blocks can be repaired, but are expensive to sleeve etc...

so what you have is some of this and some of that and Let me see...... so in 68 the heads Should have holes for acc. brackets (i think) those don't.BUT that is the right Bracket but that bracket is really for a Generator not an Alternator (i think) the chrome Valve cover is taller than a stock cover and may be in the way but parts are around to fix this.,A Q-jet is a good choice for the engine but I don't know the Nuances for a Chrysler carb. they didn't have HEI then but that is a good up grade.so you need mounting brackets for an alternator that doesn't use head bolt holes or see if those can be mounted to the Pass.side.see if Clocking/Moving the front half of the alt. will allow for some adj. but I don't think it will.A q-jet for a chevy 350 will be fine and is prob. similar to what you have.Pull a valve cover and tell us the number on the head. to get the year of production.

Thanks everyone for your Input!.
Here's a little more information: Engine is Stamped 781102374 amd V0821HC Head cast # is 3917291 Block cast # is 3914678 Crank cast # is 3911001
After a little search on the web, I think what I have is a: 1968 327 Big Journal, 2 bolts main, cast crank with 275hp that came from something like an Impala with 4bbl and a Powerglide tranny.
Pistons are "double dome" and stamped 040 on it.. so my guess is my block is .040 oversize, I could post a picture if someone is curious.
-Carb is not stock -Ignition is not stock, It looks like a GM HEI (1975-1980)
I just finished replacing rear main seal, Oil pan Gasket, Head gasket and intake manifolt gasket... intake gasket and rear main seal were leaking...
First time for me working on a SBC, I'm a yourgster :P kind of use to work on inline 4 cyl with alot of sensors and computers
Since I need to reajust valves...how much preload are you guys suggesting on rocker arm at TDC I saw different opinion on the web... Some say 1/2 turn after loose is removed from puchrod...Haynes manual suggest 1 turn... anyone??
Thanks again

Thanks just worked out that way...LOL... Don't know about the E-Maill alerts one of the other GURU's might.
I've got more info. You may want to post that complete block ie on
Craig's list or E-Bay. Sell the complete engine. It maybe worth
something to a purist. All Numbers matching. BOY if you had the
VIN number you can really track it's history....
Its got good numbers...Good Luck
