Hello, I was going to look in a couple local scrap yards to see if I can find some vortec heads instead of my 462624 heads. I know I need to look out for three triangles like teeth on a saw and the '906' ending cast # as identifiers . My question for you what are some popular chevy car models that have vortec heads?

good luck

most scrap yards know what those heads are AND how popular they are and therefore remove them nearly as soon as the vehicle comes in

if the yard doesn't pull them first, there are dozens of people doing the same thing you are

make sure to educate yourself well enough on what you're looking for that you don't get scammed

Have you consider news ones? By the time you by junkyard heads and the rebuild them you could be only a few dollars away from new ones-

Exactly.
Why waste time looking thru junk yards for questionable parts when you can buy new  for such a reasonable price.
Just the valves in the engine that was in the Beretta cost more than 2 pairs of those Vortec heads new. How can you beat a bargain like that?

Dave

What was the cost $450.00 ea? I agree Trick Flow has them at a very resaonable  price. They have the cast iron and Aluminumssome of the cost are less then a $1000.00 a pair. They take the guess wok out of it...

I met a guy that has a competitive pulling Truck the connectings rods were $1000.00 ea. He said and they still broke them. Titanium is very hard to machine!

I asked him if thats the case, why not use aluminum rods? Then after 10 or 20 pulls threw them away?

So I found a set of vortec heads ending with cast # 906. The guy wants $200 for the pair and will guarantee magnaflux and pressure test (if either fails he'll give back the $200. Is this better than going out and buying a set of heads for $600 ($300/head)?

We are here to help you. We only give our opinions. You wouldn't have come on an open Forum that has smart guys. Most of the guys on this Forum that have been there and done that. We come from varying backgrounds. Some from stock drag cars up to Pro-Mods. Grin  Cool
Now when you take the heads to a reputable machine shop and he tells you the heads need this and that. You can put $800 to $1000 in parts and labor. I'm not saying you will but it's very possible. I have heads taking up room in my shop because guys that own them don't know what to do with them... Remember this stock head will only take a .500 lift cam, and runs out of gas about the same area. of .500 to .550 of lift.

When you buy new heads that are complete, they're ready to bolt on. When you buy used heads, you have to make sure they are good, that means spending money on them. How much depends on how bad they are. Many companies that sell new head give thepurchaser the option to have the heads prepped for higher lift cams whereas used factory heads are going to require the same work to accomodate higher lift.

Ya gotta ask yourself, can you afford to buy used heads and then spend money to have them inspected to make sure they're good, OR can you afford to buy new heads that are ready to bolt on?
