Recently I have taken a big interest in american muscle. I have many questions but I need a few answered because im going to be doing a project soon and I need some help.

I have $1500 to spend and I have a 78' SBC 350 in good condition it's stock.

I want to make some power out of it and recently I decided I wanted to make a 383 stroker out of it. But now im thinking maybe just spending my budget on something a little easier.

For instance is getting vortec heads a good idea? ( this is going to be daily driven not a full on race car)

And if it is a good idea how would I go about getting it carb'd?

Also I want to know a little about cams and what I should be looking for when I read about them.

But most of all I want to know what you would do if you have a 78' SBC and $1500 how would you go about spending it?

Like I said im new to the whole muscle thing and want to know a lot more about it thanks for reading,

Hi there,
The hard part for a rookie is the basic understanding of matching
the parts which cannot happen in 5 minutes.
I don't know if the websites are still there but look for
Iskenderian for cams and related parts like rockers//Valves
 and springs..
Buy proven USA cylinder heads or go to reknown head workers who
do it once and once only needed..
To get any real power you need 9/1 comp minimum..
Best books to buy I ever had were Grumpy Jenkins //John L inds/
and Visards College of Knowledge of Chevy motors..
The other Guys can keep in touch with what you buy//How many
mega Dollars and where to get the best deal..
Where I am in Australia there are NO Best deals as the
importers are mostly liars/thieves and B/S merchants...
Good luck with your project and proceed slowly...

Welcome To CHP Loom112:

All very good points Skyeking:

If I can add: If you want some information on paperback go to www.cartech.com There is a wealth of information. Cool

If you have a budget of $1500 it is not a lot of money by todays standards. In reality $1500 will buy you a good set of Aluminum Heads.

Skyeking miss spelled: It's David Vizard. (Don't get mad Noel) When you get to the cartech web-site you will find the informationm Skyeking has mentioned. Mr. Skyeking is from the land under the SUN...He likes to pick on us old guys...LOL...

Loom112 if you have questions ask away... Grin  Cool

Personally I'd go to Amazon, spend about $100 on 4 or 5 books. Then I'd save every penny I could until I was finished reading said books. Then I'd build a solid bottom end with the good factory parts already in the motor. Then I'd spend whatever's left on a good set of heads.

Vortecs are considered by some to be the very best factory production heads available. Get an aftermarket, or GMPP, Vortec bolt pattern, 4bbl dual plane manifold. A set of 1-5/8" long tube headers to finish it off.

If you want more specifics, you have to give us more specifics...like what vehicle you plan on putting this in, what transmission you're going to use, AND what rear gear you have or will use.

$1500 is a tight budget to start with but with a little knowledge & effort it can be done.

If it were my $1,500 and the short block is ACTUALLY in GOOD condition, I would spend the money on new aftermarket complete heads, new cam kit and timing chain, gaskets. Hope you already have headers and a dual plane aluminum intake. Search ads and swap meets for those if not, and maybe you can have it all!

Sorry to hear that the importers there are thieves. Frown
I always looked at Australia and thought it was such a nice place but I guess there are low life's everywhere.
I understand that everything costs a lot more there, appliances, car parts, etc. Some who have visited said even a coke was 4 times what it cost here. Shocked

Dave:
I know someone in Germany and it's very expensive there also. It was $8.00 a gal. He had purchased a Corvette.  I was going to send him a set of #186's. virgin castings. I purchased them back in the early 1970's. He told me not to. It would kill me for shipping... Grin  Cool Just my 2 cents. We have to kill the Rice Burner's though...Shoot a SCUD at them what do you think???? Grin  Cool
