I'm not a big block guy so there are definately guys out there that know more than me but, 76 was pretty much at the low point for power in chevy. Way past the Muscle car peak. there are better heads to spend money on. Do a little research on heads.

+1 Chances are good that the heads will be peanut ports.,. the good oval port heads are 781's and 049's. These are the last 3 digits in the casting #'s found under the rocker covers.

Skye hows the Lemonaid?
You need rectangular Port big block heads.#3856208,39199840,3919842,3931063, If you want aluminum head numbers let me know.
I had a stock 402 with really stock parts other then the crane cam.Heads had stock valves sizes. I ran that car for 15 years. The last few years I had it out it ran 10:20 122 MPH what a fun car it was in a 68 Camaro. Then I had my serious car 1966 ChevyII it weighted 2800lbs 600lbs without me. LOL I could get that into the eights in a 1/4 mile just had to make some changes'. Thanks, Bob

The peanut ports are good for towing as they produce a lot of low end torque. For performance they make good boat anchors.

Mike,,,,, I just rebuilt a 454 and put it in a 83 crew cab dually, with th400 and 3.73 gears.
It runs great and has plenty of power!!!! I am more than satisfied with the overall performance being a work truck engine.

check out the link.
This engine consists of: standard bore stock peanut port heads flat top pistons moly rings lunati 60200 voodoo cam (I did NOT use those lifters I mentioned in the thread, just get the cam and lifter kit and you will be good to go) lunati springs to match eddy performer intake accell billet distributor 750 cfm quad jet from sheanmerphyinduction summit high performance fuel pump NGK plugs factory manifolds (more than adequate for the truck) true dual 2 1/4 exhaust through flowmaster 3 chamber (nice and quiet)
with lower gears I would say you could go 1 size larger cam but I dont recommend it if you are going to do a lot of pulling, My truck is very snappy out of the hole even tho it weighs 6500lbs empty!
That cam pulls VERY strong all the way to 5000 rpm I have not wound it any further but it didnt appear to run out of steam I just didnt want to max out my new engine with less than 100 miles on it.

+1 Dave, In stock form this is true. But, ported to gasket size, with the manifold opened up the same.,. it's quite another story. This surgery however, requires a few tools.

Peanut ports opened up

Getting close (bottom) before porting (top)

OEM iron intake (top) Eddy Performer (bottom)

Tools that I use

Finishing tool

Heads all done and peanuts become huge gasket matched.,. oval ports

IF, I can do it, then anyone else can also do it, if they would only dare to try.

Tuff: they say great minds think alike. Your die grinders and set-up look like my set-up. I'd better go check my flow bench see if it still there...LOL...
Great pictures Tuff! How you doing. Bob

Thanks, I know my bench is still around, somewhere,,,,,,,,,, chuckles. I have tons of pics of things that I've done over the years.,. with great results. Heads are where ALL the power is generated.,. this concept is too often overlooked. It seems to me, that the younger crowd discounts experience and knowledge,,,,,,, they'd rather opt for that 1000 horse chip and their laptop. Truthfully, it just ain't so and won't ever happen unless an engine is massaged by experienced hands.,. the "potential" power might be there, but rounding up those horses is quite another tale. I'm doing great, sitting back.,. just watching/waiting for the 1st rate engine builders to chime in.,. just like Skylark is waiting for input Us old guys are always prepared to learn "new tricks",,,, I think.

Thank you guys for all your answers and help i did the research and found that they are oval port heads, i just wanted to see how in depth a port and polish job was, i could go with rectangle ports but i am just trying to work with wat i have and was seeing if i could do anything with wat i have, cause the heads were the right price of free and i was going to rebuild them and put them on my truck, im not looking for MASSIVE HP GAINS cause the truck is just a pavment pounder but i would still like to learn how to do things right and with what i have so i can pass the knowledge down to some one else just like you guys have done to me.

Mike, stay clear of rec port heads.,. at low R's there is little runner velocity. This lazy flow encourages fuel coagulation or puddling in the runners. Your ovals will work just fine for your mild build. Bigger is not always better, unless the entire engine is built around a specific purpose and a high RPM power band.
