377 stroker

I know you can decrease the stroke of a 400 small block to get a 377 stroker, but i want to build one with a 350 with a 3.75" stroke and standard bore. is that still a 377 stroker, and could i get some info on the build from yall?

There will be a few things that need to be done in order to stuff a 400 crank into a 350 block. 1) The block will need some grinding for clearance in the areas shown in pic.
 2) The rod bolt/cam interference with longer than 5.565" rods, is another in need of consideration.,. again, grinding or a small base circle cam.
 Small base circle cam
 400 rod 5.565" on left, 350 rod 5.7" on right

ok guys, if i use the 5.565 rods, i shouldnt have to worry about cam to rod clearence should I?

.. What you're talking about building is usually called a 383 to distinguish it from a 377... that's because it's usually made with a block bored 0.030" oversize during the rebuilding process yielding 383"... However, if you start with a standard 4" block, it also ends up at 377"... for info on 383's just put 383 into the search box for this magazine or any other performance magazine and you'll get tons of articles about how to build a 383"... just use a standard 4" bore block for a 377" '383'...
.. If you have a low mileage or no mileage 350" Chevy engine, you could add a 400 crank (with main bearing size turned down smaller) and rods and re-use the pistons and rings and everything else... not recommended for higher mileage 350's because a 377" 383 would pull the pistons down out of the previous wear pattern area and cylinder wall ridge...

ive built 2 this way with no problems. 400, 5.56 rods using standard 350 pistons. i used an externally balanced, 400, balancer & flexplate. summit sells cheap, new 383 cranks for under $200. nice torquey motor!

A BIG PLUS 1 The advantange of the long rod is longer dwell time at TDC, which becomes wasted time at BDC. The other advantage is better rod angle with the long rod, but we can narrow that slight margin by turning your pistons 180 degrees on the rod, so the front of the 350 piston faces the rear. The wrist pin is offset by .040" to .060" on pistons.,. use this advantage. I've built countless short rod combos that can more than hold their own, against amateur built long rod 383's. I call this a poor man's stroker.

Absolutely Pman.,. contrary to popular belief by newbies, who are lulled into believing that a bunch of exotic parts.,. arranged recklessly, will produce magic power numbers. This theory simply is untrue.,. the guy who knows how to build engines and then rounds up the power,,,, by virtue of being able to find it, by first recognizing where to look. It's NOT rocket science, but rather experience that pays off in the long run and not some trick way of tightening nuts and bolts.
