You were told correctly. The build sheet is needed.

+1,but in 70 a ss still had to have a big block, and that will be in the vin.if it has a small block code it was probably a malibu,if it has a big block code, especially a 454,it was probably an ss.not exact but it could be a start if you dont have the buildsheet.

That's not a bad way to get an idea. If the VIN has the big block code in it, then the car is an original SS.

There should be a data plate on the firewall too that'll decode the car.

If the car is somewhat original the rear end would be a 12 bolt... with possibly a posi unit. Also the tranny would be a TH-400 with the electrical kick-down switch over the gas pedal.
TH-350's have a cable kick-down hooked to the carb

The engine designation letter was not in the VIN until 72'. There were small block SS option cars in 70'. The cowl tag will not have the RPO code in 70' so that won't help either. A big block non SS car could be ordered. As the junk man says, you need a build sheet or some original paperwork from the selling dealer. After forty years you can't go by the parts on the car as they are all bolt on.

+1 canted, dealer invoice or window sticker would work, too. He'd know if he had those, though. Theres always the chance that that build sheet is still maybe between the rear seat springs and padding, or hiding somewhere else.
