Money should be spent on an engine that you can get some results from. I have never seen it cost effective to build a 305 compared to a 350.

305's are good if you want to do a mild upgrade on an engine that you already have in the vehicle, BUT if you're doing a serious build then a 350 or 400 is a much better choice.

Agreed! Who wants to spend $3000 on a 250hp 305 at best? Whats a stock 350 hp rating?

crate replacement for pre-85 is 260hp turn-key for $2109.99 from jegs
got about that in my 385 short block
350 is a good starting point
305 is a waste of time, money, cast iron, and potential talent

Considering there's gazillions of them out there, they deffinatly have their place. It's designed to be an economy/smog motor in many family type sedans, and serves well. But just doesn't make sense to hot rod it, with 383's so easy and plentiful.

305s are good engines for stock vehicles and cars that just need to get from point A to point B reliably with good torque. When you start getting above any mild performance, the 305 quickly gets left behind.

To me this is not as bad as the clowns that attempt to modify those terrible Japanese imports. I hate those cars with a passion. The question is why bother. If you put the same amount of money and effort into a real car you come out way ahead of the game. In the case of the 305 since you start with less you end up with less. My last car, the 68 Camaro in the pix was built for a pretty reasonable cost for what it was. I could never get one of those little clunkers, AKA RICERS, to race me no matter how much I insulted them, and I did that a lot. They did have plenty of excuses though.

they are not worth it. it seems that everyone is on the same page on this one. if you wanted to keep something stock is the only reason why i could see building one them. or if having to follow some rules.
