yeah you need a bigger carb. if the stock cam doesnt seem like its going to be enough than go with something with a low duration but a nice lift like the .477 .480

Thanx Nova, That sounds like the advise I've been lookin for. I've been reading descriptions of different cams and i think i'm lokking in the neiborhood you mentioned. by 'low deration' are you talkin like 224/234?
And do you think a Holly 650 dbl pmpr is big enough? they seem to be plentiful in the used market for under $100.00.

yes that duration is good. not to much with a nice lift. what trans are you running? make sure you get a nice stall converter to match your cam.

Stall converter?
The trans is 3speed auto...???
12 bolt rear.
I just got the truck a month ago with no history.
I changed the oil, plugs, vacuume lines, put on flow thru mufflers then started makin noise and sprayin rubber.
3 weeks later i blew the motor while showin her off.

I've figured out that the front end is from an early corvette because it has IFS with kingpin style spindles. The 327 and tranny may have been from a vette also. The only year that had the kingpins and the 327 was 1962. I dont know what trannys were offered in the '62 vette but i dont think they had 12bolt rearends so who knows what parts are from what.

2,500 stall is very street/strip friendly.

may want to invest in a quality  radiator and a descent sized trans cooler for added protection.

Hi There,
Do not let all the cam numbers that are advertised confuse you.It is the rate
of lift on the ramps that brings on the performance or lack of it.I have seen
and done cam changes that were going to perform minor miracles on a promise
that fell flat on it's face despite all attempts to get better performance
than the cam the 2nd one replaced. I believe that GM used Crane cams at one
time. Some cam grinders that I have had dealings with are best forgotten.
Let us fight on one battlefield at a time,.

GMPP book show that these heads are discontinued The std flow 157 for both
They can be ported with a good success rate by dedicated machinists.
My 355hp ZZ4/350 has 163.Heads are only as good as the springs + cam match.
You may have to get the heads machined to take the higher lift cams on offer.
If you have not fitted a minimum of 100lbs/springs now is the time to do it.
Do NOT polish the inlets. Match all the ports and even the water holes..
Use brand new good quality pushrods. Avoid imitations as they do exist..
There is NO great necessity for roller valve gear and IF this motor survives
12 months and your are capable then put them in if you please. I use STP &
Straight 30 to run in my cams.Change oil and filter immediately and refill
30 wt for 500 miles then I use 20/50 Valvoline XLD light diesel oil full time
every time with high grade filters only. Never had a cam or lifter fail.
I must add that I see nothing to be gained by revving the guts out of a
motor I have spent a lot of my hard earned money to get..
If you want a REAL experience with speed save your money and go for a ride
in a Jet fighter for a a few grand. They beat everything..Good luck and over
    and out from Skyeking..

I will use heavier springs.

The radiator is being repaired now (had 2 leaks) and does have a trans cooler in it.

Another Question about cams, I've seen mention of decreased vacuume with high lift cams. I've got my brake booster, tranny kick-down, timing adv. and cruise cntrl. How big can i go before the vacuume wont be enough?

Can anybody tell me how lobe seperation effects performance?

you gotta go pretty big like around .600 lift with a long duration before you need to worry about vacuum.

Big thanks to all you motor-vated gearheads who take the time to share your knowledge with nuckleheads like me.

I think I've picked a cam!
Comp Cams Extreme 4x4 270    226/234... .480/.498    1800-6000 RPM range!
in a kit with springs, lifters, etc.

Performer RPM intake
Holly 650 dblpmp
2000-2400 stall converter
