Rather than rebuild the 327 from my classic hotrod truck (that spun a bearing), I decided to build a 383 with a 4 bolt 350 block from a '78 3/4 ton that siezed 5 yrs ago.  I have a set of double hump 2.02 heads from the old 327 that I,de like to use. I have almost no budget and this old truck (1940) will be my winter daily driver. So I'm looking at installing a 383 crank kit (or maybe a whole engine kit)to keep costs down. They will no doubt be lower quality parts, so I want to keep the cam kinda mild for longevity and drivability.  It wont see any track time but I want to be able to smoke the tires at will, from a roll. The selection of camshafts is pretty overwelming. any sugestions would be greatly appretiated.

Comp Cams extreme 4x4 is good in that situation. Cant remeber duration but lift is intake.447 & exhaust.462   Its a mild but effective performance cam.

+1, keep in that range and you should have alittle stump puller. gonig any bigger will be more performance than you need. or so it sounds.

  Hi there,
If you look at the factory cams there are 2 to choose from that a
383 would take to the 157? flow of the heads that you have. Over
the years I have personally used these in a 355" and can see no
reason why they would not do the job. They would work O.K. at stock
timing settings and the natural torque of the 383 would be a great+
214/224*--Not a high rever but idles well and is very smooth..
222/222*--290hp for 350-- very much the same and will respond to a
good carby like a B/G 725 which should suit the 383 very well with
it's stock 76--78 secs.Otherwise any 650 might be all you need for
       your specific needs..
A set of 2.5" Camaro Ex manifolds will help
keep the torque where you want it with a 2.5" system etc.,.
         All the best with project...Skyeking

+1, i know you said you werent looking to spend alot of money but a set of headers would get you some nice bottom end power.im sure they dont make them for your truck but whatever.

1/2 ton headers will fit and its easy to find  used ones for a cheap price. $50 or less

the truck has mis matched exhaust manifolds to fit the stearing by (still rubs sometimes) I was thinking of getting a set of block huggers ($80 on Ebay) and hope they clear. As long as were talking exhaust... I put on a set of cherry bombs for that old sound I loved 'back in the day' and found i lost some bottom end. So i'm hoping the stroker will give me enough torque that i can keep the cherry bombs. My buddy says throw'em away and get flowmasters. Anyway, back to the 1/2 ton headers, do you think they would do better than the huggers.

Full length headers will flow better than block huggers. I would toss the cherry bombs too. If your after performance why choke down the engine with the mufflers?

Horsepower sells Engines and torque wins races.

Hey there Sky,
First of all, thanks for taking the time to help me out. This is a great forum. i didnt expect such quick responses. You hotrod guys are awesome.

Is 157 all I'm gettin from those heads? A little disapointing, maybe i can improve that down the road.

What I have on hand for intake is an Edelbrock 'Torker' and a choice of either a holly 450 or a Q-jet. (A bigger carb was going to be the next purchase before I overheated that 327.)

As far as the cam, will i get enough lift from a factory cam? do you know how that would compare to the extreme 4x4 wich i think has a longer duration? Although I said mild, I still want it to sound like a hotrod.

you probably won't be happy with the torker...i've read about a bunch of people on this forum that have used one and did not like it...those same people will happily recommend a performer rpm or rpm air gap...i have the performer rpm (no gap) on my stroker and LOVE it...

Thanx Scott, I read a couple threads that talked about the torker like you said. I looked on ebay, found some used performer rpm,s at a resonable price. thank again.

A plain performer would be better than a torker
