what kind/type of crank and rods are you using...are they capable of spinning 7000rpm?

You may want to go a forged crank. also upgrade to forged i-beam or even h-beams. Get them balanced to. Then you'll have a near bullet broof combo(anything can happen). Another option if you want rpm, destroke your 400 to a 377 with a aftermarket 350 crank with 400 mains. They scream. The cost can add up fast though.

What kind of heads are using? Have they been modified in any way? Whats your compression[static or dynamic]? What type of intake and carb? Do you have headers?

With a solid set-up like that I would you the 305myself. 6500rpm is prob closer to what you can expect out of the cam .

is the crank and rods new or are they used?

if used, have them checked (magnafluxed) and fully inspected by your machinist
if everything checks out they should be good for 6500 but not any more than that and not for sustained use...the machinist should also be able to give a recommnedation

i'd go with the 292 cam.the heads you have have too little port volume to feed a 406 at 7000,no matter what has been done to them.with those heads, and the 292 cam, plus the intake, compression ratio,it would perform light years better, with great torque at low and mid range, plus that cam has a nasty idle as well.
