Clarification? I suppose...
"Specific" in a scientific sense means a measurement per unit or a measurement relative to another. This makes the measurement irrelevant of scale, so the system can be better analyzed.
Usually "specific" means per-unit-mass, as is the case with specific volume, a.k.a. volume per unit mass.
But in this case it is power per volume, or horsepower per cubic inch. Which 327's can achieve very high horsepower per cubic inch values. It simply means their combination of parts best fit the situation they were put in and they efficiently make power in their common trim. For comparison sake, this is because 305's and 307's have smaller bores and the 350's have longer strokes. The big bore and short stroke (comparatively) of the 327 puts less strain the relatively poor factory induction system which makes for better specific output.
Hopefully that clears things up.

Comparing the 327 to a 305 or 307 is just ridiculus. Why not make the comparison to the 302?Comparing engines with same bore size, similar stroke and same style heads would make more sense since your referencing the poor factory induction system.

And a comparison between a 302 and 327 would have been more appropriate than the 305/307.

One thing about engine's is you could build 2 identical motors (as close as possible, anyway. No 2 intakes are identical in port size as well as heads), set cam degrees the same, use the same spark plugs and set them both at 5 degrees and one motor will perform better. I gaurentee on the dyno one would have more hp. maybe the other would have more torque.

jon, that is a good point that not everyone realizes. The difference is due to the allowable tolerance on parts. No two pistons will be EXACTLY the same. They will be close, but not identical. Same with every part on the engine.

youll notice that with factory cars too theyll have the same motors but one will be a little stronger

To GibTg and everyone else not getting along. I think you should all relax. Try to make your points without downing anyone. I try to stay out of these things but I really think we should all get back on track. I enjoy being a part of these forums and I want to keep it that way.

its not the size of the motor, its how its built. sure, if you guys have pretty much the same setup (as far as intake, similar cam, similar heads, ect) on both the 350 and the 327, which it sounds like, the 350 will most likely prevail. a 327 is a great motor- they wind up fast, they make power higher up in the rpm range so that 350 will probly make more power/torque lower down in the curve. with the right stall and gear, that 327 should be a rompem' stompem' little motor.

glass houses guys it's painfully obvious that none of us are english majors... but we're ALL gear heads...or what ever you want to be called when has any conversation stayed strictly on subject?... debate team?...NEVER even seen a member of such a travesty
