Most assembly lubes makes a mess when used so I make up some that has more of a gel texture.Another good thing is that if an engine sits awhile before being run I dont have to worry about it dripping off.

I've been reading some articles on SBC engine asembly methods and have found some interesting statements. Chiltons says to space the piston ring gaps evenly on the pistons. This is a 1975 copyrighted Chiltons. I'm thinking methods have improved thru experience since then. Other articles are more specific on gap location, stating 3 and 11 o'clock, talking about thrust concerns. Is there a tried and true piston ring gap location? Maybe a generally accepted Rules most Rebuilders rely on? Another suggestion is to coat the cylinders with STP Oil Treatment. All thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.

Oil expander gap over wristpin, oil rail gaps one needs to be 1"to the left and the other 1" to be the right of the oil expander gap. that leaves the other half of the piston for the last 2rings. With the oil expander gap pointing down you can put 2nd ring at 10 o'clock and top ring at 2 o'clock position. I dont reccomend coating cylinder walls. After the rings are on the pistons I dunk mine in a can of clean 10w30 oil for a few seconds then put a pushrod thru wristpin to let excess oil drain back into can. With the rings, piston and wristpin coated in oil nothing else is needed.
