We just got the block, heads, new pistons installed on the original rods, rings, new oil pump and strainer, new bearings, freshened (.010" off)crankshaft, new cam and lifters, heads rebuilt with new valves, seal, engine gasket kit, from our Machinist today.
Brought it all home, got the block on the engine stand and started chasing/cleaning all the threaded block holes.
My Machinist recommended a breakin oil that has Zinc like Rotella.
We are using the NAPA #105 Lube as an assembly grease per his recommendation.
I know we're a ways off from startup, but I'd like to pick what breakin oil I'll use as I'd like to dip the pistons/rings in it before putting them in the cylinders.
I've checked Summit and they have Redline, Lucas Oil, Comp Cams, etc, and several additives.
I guess I'm asking what oil, or combination oil/additive works best on a fresh 350.
All helpful relies are appreciated.

Hi,
I ran in my brand new factory ZZ4 on straight 30w with a K&N filter
for the usual 500 miles..This is all you need without extras.
I kept my revs under 3200 and did NOT lug the motor...Skyeking...

i believe the zz4 is a roller motor, if you have a flat tappet cam you absolutely want to run a high zddp (zinc and phosphate) oil. everyone tells me delo 400 15w-40 works great. i also use the redline zddp additive with all my oil changes.todays oil works fine on roller cams but can mess a flat tappet up fast.

Thanks for the reply.
We're running a flat tappet cam.
So would the Royal Purple Breakin Oil shown here:

do the job without using an additive?
Anyone have experience with this oil?

You can buy break-in oil but its pricey, about $7-$9 a quart in my parts. I use Delo 15W-40 with a bottle of break-in addititve. Its alot cheaper and I've had no problems whatsoever doing it that way. Like p2 I put a bottle of additive in with oil changes as well. Priming the engine and filling carb with fuel is a must with any new engine using a flat tappet cam.

I've used the Royal Purple break-in oil for customers who wanted it. I've had no issues with it other than the price but I personaly dont think its a must have myself.

AGREED! $10 bottle of additive and $10-$15 for the Delo 400 is hard to beat and it works. Some of the cams I get even come with a card stating to use Delo 400 or Rotella. Cam compines wouldnt reccomend it if it didnt work. They wouldnt want to  replace cams due to lobe failure would they?

+1, its a must for all flat-tappets. go with the delo and your choice of an additive.make sure you baby it for a min. get the rings a nice seal before you stomp on that beast.good luck

Thanks to everyone, I appreciate all the replies.
I wanted to attach a pic showing my Son chasing the block threads.
But I can't attach a pic. So just know all of you are helping me pass on SBC/Engine rebuild skills. I think every kid who wants to be in a Mechanic-related
career should re-build at least one engine.

What additive do you use?
Do you stay with the same weight Delo and Additive every oil change?

Anyone use this GM EOS assembly lube?
http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/results.cfm?singlepart=1&partnumber=EOS
I'll use the Delo oil as recommended, but I still need to find the best additive.
Sorry for being a PITA, but I only get one chance to do it right.

I'm using Comps additive now but theres several good additives on the market. I stick with the Delo 15w-40 and additive at oil changes. I havent used that assembly lube I make-up my assembly lube.
