I have a 1976 chevy 3/4 ton 4wd it has a sb 350 that is pretty much stock. I want to build a 383 stroker to put in it, i have a block already but i dont know exactly what i need to do to build a 500hp motor with lots of low end torque because its going to be used for mud drags. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

you need to get the 3.75 crank and have the block bored .030 and clearanced for the stroker crank.i have an externally balanced crank but mine is a street motor where you will see longer periods of high rpm so i would get an internally balanced crank.that being saidd the heads will make or break the build.with a good set of heads 500hp is easy with a pretty mild cam.i make almost that with 10.2:1cr,aluminum fastburn heads, and a 226/228@50 520/522@50.so spend the money in the right places and get a combo that works well together

$1500 getting 500hp? 383 stroker with vortec heads and correct cam will make good power. Are you planning on buying everything or do you have used pieces to use[carb, intake, dist]?

yeah get some work done on the heads and with a bigger cam and nice compression you can make 500. With the combo of parts to get to 500 you might give alittle low end torque up though.

i never seen any engine with vortec heads hit the 500 hp mark , that i can remember. i would say u will be closer to 450hp with a good cam and some porting/valve job.
if im not mistaken a lower lsa cam is better for a torquer engine, also mud racing is probably harder on the engine than drag racing would be because you have a heavier rig ext, so i would suggest buying one of scats or eagles forged 383 rotating assemblies, they run around 1,200 on ebay.

with alot of compression i think it can be done but like i said its gunna give up bottom torque but im sure he will have some good gears out back.

Does anybody really think he's gonna build a 383 thats capable of making over 400hp for $1500?

383 for 1500? where do i sign up!Maybe he has connections. I dont even think you could get those parts that cheap at the cost as a distributor gets them.

Def not!I know from experience. He'll have a good grand in labor cost getting everything fixed and prepped. $4000 is closer to it

He can spend $1500 in getting those heads ported/polished. $1500 is closer to stock builds
