Wayne, The factory has to strengthen the roof to make up for the missing material, but it is not as stiff/strong as solid roof would be, unless the car was designed from the beginning to have less than a full roof the chassis will have more flex to it.

That's one of the reasons why I avoid any convertible that came out after the fulltop models. Those cars were second thoughts that went into production with add on stiffeners that do little to stiffen the chassis, but do a great job of adding weight.
