Is any one else out there as amazed as I am at what these NHRA Pro Stock guys are getting out of 500 inches of naturally aspirated motor? We're talking 1500+ HP to the ground.  I mean, I know they have huge budgets, spend a fortune in R&D, but they still have to keep everything in a 500 inch box using very specific casting numbers for blocks and heads, and yet they still keep squeezing more out of them, as if over time it will never end.  Has anyone ever seen one of these beasts up close, I mean really close??  How do they do it? (They'll never tell).

gotta love technology.i remember back in the 80's when they broke the 7 second barrier and it was a huge deal.now with improved cam, valvetrain, cylinder head technolgy, theres no wonder they shift these things over 9 grand.and dont forget about the chassis and clutch improvements as well,as you can have all the power under the hood, its getting it to the ground is the key.

If you go back a little over 40 years the top fuel dragsters could not keep up with todays pro stockers. If I remember correctly Garlits first hit 200 back in the mid 60s and his ET was nowhere near 6.50.
They are the most technical of all the Pro classes and every little detail of the car is paid attention to.
I talked to someone in the know about 5 years ago and I was told then that a Pro Stock motor was in the over 200K range.
It is truly amazing the power that they ring out of those motors and how much they get to the ground.
The competitive ones all have giant budgets. Long gone are the days when you could build a competitve car in your garage. There is also little stock about a Pro Stock car. Some may have the stock headlights or tail lights but thats it.
I remember when the class started back in the late 60s. They were production cars then with motors you could actually buy from the factory. Add a tunnel ram, a roller cam and with some luck you might actually qualify. I remember the times were in the high 9s back then, reachable by some of todays American street cars NA.

I think the 10.5 cars are below 6.5 seconds for the 1/4. They may be registered for the street but they are not street cars.

The Outlaw classes are decidedly impressive for their ability to glue a 10.5 tire to the track, but the 6's are being run on blowers, turbos, and nitrous.

the outlaw 10.5 cars are impressive,as is mike moran, the first to break the 5 second barrier (5.97) in his twin turboed big block monte carlo.but for normarlly aspirated, pro stocks are more impressive imo

i agree with the naturaly aspirateds are more impressive. but getting a car to run 5.97 on a street tire pretty much is just crazy.

Naturaly aspirated engines on street tires is what I like to see.

69 Nova355:

I don't think Moran is on any kind of street tire. He runs big slicks.

72 Chevelle383:

Something sounds wrong about the 454 that runs low 6s, unless he is talking about the 1/8th mile.
Did you ever see it run? There are a lot of talkers out there and few who can do what they say.
I had a professionally built 2040 lb. drag car that had an all aluminum 632 with big chiefs, sheetmetal intake, 2 dominators, 2 nitrous stages, probably more than 1500HP and it's best would not have been anywhere near low 6s in the 1/4.
I also hung around with other pro mod guys at the time and none of them were running low 6s with some pretty big budgets. If I remember correctly the Pro Mod record for the time, 7 years ago, was in the 6.20s and that was for cars that were making well in excess of 2000HP.
