guys,i love the mag, have bought it for many years.but i have 1 gripe.enough of the 496 engine builds.you have done them to death.if you want to get creative, try building a big inch small block.the technology's there for it with the aftermarket blocks and heads available.better yet if your hearts are set on building big blocks, how about building a modern version of some old hipo motors (ie. L-78,L-72 etc).dont get me wrong,i love the engine articles, but it gets old when its the same ole displacement.

The 496 is a popular build because you can add a 4 1/4 stroke crank to a 454 with an .060 overbore and get the bigger size and it runs well.
My last motor was a 4.60 bore 4 3/4 stroke Dart big M. It ran good from day one with no trouble ever. I sold the car and motor a few months ago.
Here is a shot of the short block.

yeah its a popular build and as long as that is thats what they are going to print. its all about what people are doing right now, and how to sell more mags. people like to copy builds.

Personally I would think it makes more sense to go bigger if you can afford a new block.
I found a new big M on the internet for 1799+ shipping. Since you need a whole new rotating assy anyway and you are going to spend at least 500 or so for machine work on the old block why not go bigger for an extra 1300. I built a whole new short block with 632" for about 1400 more than it would have cost for a 496 with a used block. If you had to go buy a used 454 block the difference would be even less.

i agree but a 496 can be made alot milder than the 632.someone might not want all that for the street.

69nova355 you understand the magazine business quite well. Popularity keeps the lights on.

I like the 496 builds. Even though I am planning a 598 build, the info is still relevant.

598, wow that will make some power. How big can you get a big block anyways?
