get a 6.0 LS engine...the truck engine I'm refering to, they make a lot of power, and are reliable assuming you keep the oil clean just like any other motor. LS engines have skirted blocks making the engine much stronger, and the heads are lightyears beyond any of the crap available for a standard small block chevy.

the ebay post above isn't a completed engine, but would be a hell of a start to a badass engine. You can find complete LQ9's all over, check craigslist, and they make a shitload of parts for them like carbureted intakes, ignitions specifically carb swaps on these motors etc. stock they around 340hp, but a cam swap will take you over 400hp.
also a guy built a 5.3LS based truck engine not long ago with a $100 ebay turbo and intercooler and got like 600hp at the wheels, but that was on race gas and 18psi. 5.3 and the LQ9 (6.0) are both very good engines, and both of them are iron block engines, therefore they're cheaper to build, and are stronger.

he could also go eco friendly e85 route running strong compression & boost, there are lots of possibilities. i would not recommend a 5.3 tho i seen a couple break. so its 6.0+ in my book
496 , 383 , 6.0 ls or bigger , all will make 500+hp with around 5 grand , the 496 and 6.0 being more streetable since they don't need very big cams to get to the mark
although the 383 will require some premium heads.

forget the big block. big inch small blocks are where its at. find a 400 small block and build it for whatever your trying to *** for a street car you can acheive the 400hp mark very easily with the right pistons, cam, headas, and carburetor

Most of the suggestions here are pretty good. My question is how far do you plan to go with the car and are you planning any track time. If you just want to accelrate quicker than 99% of the cars at a stoplight it wont take much. Even your rebuilt current engine with very few mods will do that. The other thing you need to consider, once you add a lot of power to a car, is that the whole drivetrain must be upgraded. Then there is traction. Even 500 HP will make any street tire cry for mercy. I suggest you go to the track look at some of the setups there and ask a few questions. Then decide how far you want to go. If you want to be King of the strip, even on test and tune night you will need a lot more than 500 hp. That is pretty puny at the track. I had 1000+ hp cars and got whipped more than once.

torque is what he wants if he wants to blow doors off the ls mortor cars. throttle response in the new cars are crazy, you just tap the gas and it goes. they are not that fast but quick off the start stop light to stop light. get a big block with lots of low end torque.

No I'm not looking to take it to the track. I want to go the more Pro Touring route. Something that isnt TOO burly, but sounds mean, is pratical and pretty damn fast. I was looking at the LS1 and that looks like a very viable option. Every month I will be able to dump 2-3 Gs into the car so in total it will be done fairly quick. If you guys could recommend any mehanics, fabricators, painters, etc, in Southern California that would be a big help also.

If I had that car and wanted to start over with the engine, the LS would be a no brainer. What you describe you want in your last post says LS. Check out the LS engine section in the current issue of CHP. This is a great guide that will help you decide.

ls1 is too old , try lsx or ls7 or ls3 or ls2
id even take a 6.0 over an ls1 any day for more strength and torque , also the ls1 has very thin sleeves.
ls7 also has thin sleeves, so if boost/nos is in ur future don't go ls7 or ls1 unless your gonna shoot a safe amount.

Oh yeah, the LS1 is SOOO YESTERDAY...
Is this a god damn fashion show?
The vast majority of us here have hot rods with engines designed 40 years ago, shut the hell up if have to have something trendy.

ya i have a gen 1 small block, and would one day like to have a big block.I never liked the newer motors with computers and fuel injection(lt1/lt4 and tbi)however i have to admit the ls motors have made me consider one.they seem very convienent with their blend of power dependability gas mileage and easy tuning.
