hey all, I'm going to be looking at a '76 coupe in the next couple days. It's supposed to have a 454 and a 400 tranny in it. The pics showed some surface rust and the body looks good otherwise, he says it's straight, but time will tell I suppose. I know that's not the stock engine so I'm going to give it a good once over. Since this is going to be my first muscle, I wanted to know if there is anything else I should look at that I haven't thought of. Thanks!

I own a 79, the same body style used from 75-79. Check out the frame. Is the sub frame connected? Depending on how the 454 is built, that motor could twist the body with a heavy enough foot off the line. Have the current owner drive it down the road and you drive behind him. Watch for sidewinding especially if it still has the stock leaf spring suspension. Look closely at the rear quarter panels. See if there were some cheap bondo repairs above the halfway point between the rear wheel wells and the rear quarter windows. You can order brand new "half" quarters for the car, but any metal that needs to be replaced above that will need to be hand crafted. Hope this helps, good luck.
