You can get the teeth count for the ring and pinion off the ring gear and do the math

Dave, where does the post say he wants to keep the diff cover on?
Burtonmarine, If the tag is missing from the diff, then you will have to pull the cover and count the teeth on the ring and pinion gears
Jake
PS Dave, lets keep it civil

Couldn't you pop the rear of the car up in the air, put an index mark on the driveshaft, have someone run one of the rear wheels one revolution while someone else watched how many times the driveshaft went around? With a little knowledge about common gear ratios, you would probably figure it out, no?

That would get him close hotrod but I dont see what the big deal is with pulling cover off. Each to their own

I would rather pull the cover off than do the drive shaft counting. Seems less of a headache to me, plus the diff gets fresh fluid.

Totally agree with you guys. Just an option if you're hellbent on not pulling the cover or wanted to know quickly without having new fluids, gasket, RTV, etc, on hand.

My thought is if he doesnt know what gear he has then he has never opened it up so he has no idea how long the fluid has been in there or what kind of shape the fluid is in. $20 bucks for the parts and 20minutes of time is minor I thought.
