I have a 2004 suburban and the speedometer will intermittenly peg out all the way over. When it does this it doesn't respond to changes in the vehicle speed at all, just stays pinned over past 120mph. If we let it sit overnight, it usually returns to normal, but it has happened four times now, and once it is pinned it doesn't come back for hours. It has happened on 2 long 5 hour trips, and then again recently on a trip to the store. Could there be any solder joints to check on this cluster, or where else should I start? Any help is appreciated...

have you plugged a scan tool that reads live data into the OBD2 port... see if the ecm is seeing the same pegged readings...
in the service information... there are trouble shooting charts for speedometer problems..
it is possible that the solder joints are going south... have you pulled and examined the speed sending unit from the tail housing of the transmission for build up of debris... and loose wiring... broken wires... melted wires... water damage...
here is the VSS data circuit for a 2005 http://repairguide.autozone.com/znetrgs/repair_guide_content/en_us/images/0900c152/80/24/81/2e/large/0900c1528024812e.gif
here is the tachometer wiring for a 2004

so it looks like it is all computer controlled by the ecm... with computer data streams... so static protections are needed...
a scan tool that reads CAN data.. with other than normal emissions is needed...

I had the same problem with the speedometer in my car. I found a website where I had it fixed for $140. They rebuild the entire cluster the guy said that all the gauges in the instument cluster are driven by the same type of motors and that I should replacce all of them before the were out. It made sence to me since the rpm's gauge was beginning to act weird. anyways here is the addres in case you wanna check it out. http://www.speedometergaugerepair.com
