The noise is on the drivers side. I replaced a lifter I thought it was and nothing. It did quiet down when I pushed on this lifter with a handle I thought. I sprayed around the upper intake for leaks and found nothing. Oil pressure is good. It's not the belt as I originally thought it was when I bought the car (I replaced that too). The area I hear the noise from the most when listening through a stick is shown in the pictures. It's heard in the upper intake. The video has the sound it's making. It sounds best towards the end as I moved to the drivers side. Thanks for any ideas.... Confused

Hi,

Don't know this engine, but does it look like an '72 454?
I also had a ticking noise, replaced belts, waterpump, adjusted the pushrods a few times (I assume you adjusted the pushrod since you replaced the lifter)
anyhow, finally I found it, the ignition distributor cap had a loose contact in it, which was hitting the rotor of the ignition, and I would swear it was in the engine Smile
When the engine was running, I checked the sparkplug cables and suddenly the noise was gone when I checked the connections on top of the distributorcap, that's how I found it....
Maybe you have the same problem??
Good luck.

i wonder if the hissing noise is the idle air bypass motor .... just bypassing a bunch of air past the throttle body..

i really don't like the lifter noise...   sounds like the cam is starting to go flat...

it still could be the fuel injectors...

Have 98 chevy silverado 3500 4x4 with 454 vortec 170000 miles making what seems to be the same nosie as in your video only sounds as if it comes from the passenger side.

would like to know what would cause this and what needs to be done.

did you check the push rods for rubbing or the rocker arms? looking at the location in the pics, and listening to the vid, it make me think it might be a rocker arm ball on the intake valve in that area. i'd check the rocker arms and spring retainers for any signs of contact where it's not supposed to. see if the ball is blue from heat also.

If you take it apart again put a straight edge across the valve stems to see if the valve is sticking up higher than the other valves I wonder if the seat is worn out causing the noise.  You can do a compression test to check this to.

A piece of garden hose held to the ear and the other end as a probe to find the exact location and source of the noise might work,,,
As a last resort a tear down would be in order

I use a $4 stethoscope for this kinda thing...

Sounds an awful lot like a loose rocker, does it miss? Maybe double check that lifter installation. Does this thing have roller lifters?

A new or old lifter would tick if the pushrod was bent or the rocker stud began to back out. Are the rocker nuts adjustable?

Have you taken a vacuum guage reading?

Sometimes old or seldom used lifters stick in the bore. Marvel Mystery Oil in the crankcase oil has quieted those for me in the past. Sometimes exhaust leaks sound like a metallic click, too. Just throwing out ideas. Smile
