I have a 76 Chevy 1-ton pickup. It needs to be repainted and I was going to do the prep and body work myself. My question is, do I have to strip the truck down to bare metal. I have heard from numerous different sources that some of the older paints that are laquer have to be stripped to prevent any compatability problems when repainting a car. I don't know if the paint used on that truck originally was laquer or not. I'd rather not strip it down if I don't have to. Any help with this dilemma would be much appreciated...

talk to your automotive paint suppliers... there are many finishes to choose from...
you might have to get a spray can loaded with the same as you are going to use and try it out...
