I got a post from one of my sister sites and thought you guys might be able to help answer his question. Here it is:
"Hello I just got an 8.5" rearend from a guy and it has 30 spindle, 3.42 gears Posi, disc breaks longer wheel studs. Anywhoo what I want to know what else do I need to do to make it stronger to handle 550 HP. This will be going into my 1986 El Camino."

I have a friend that has 31 splind with a trans brake and he does 8.70 with a spool,I think you should be good,I also have few of my other buds that do 10.50 to 11.90 on stock axles.

There was a good article in CHP a while back about beefing up the 8.5 rear.

That grand national rear should hold up just fine to 550HP.
