Im sure youve heard this before, but, forget the 305. Its best use as a boat anchor or for non-performance fuel mileage use. For the same amount of cash you could build a 350 that has more torque and hp.

I agree. Go with the 350 its a no brainer. Cheap parts, no valve size limitations because of the smaller bore on the 305, and you get more cubes yeilding more compression with similiar comb chambers.

You can not bore a 305 out to a 350.
Horsepower sells Engines and torque wins races.

What has been said about using a 350 rather than a 305 is all true. The fact that it is going in a S10 may make a difference if you are just looking for a fun street car. With a mild performance 305 it will be a big step up over the stock engines, however the 4.3 runs quite strong. The magazine has done a few 305 builds in the near past. You may want to check those articles for a build plan.

Man you can build a 305 with 400hp just look in hotrod mag they built one, Also dont listen to all these guys, if you have a 305 given to you thats great, build it. I don't conform to what everyone else does.I built a s-10 and every one told me to put a small block in it.I thought why thats what every one does,I dare to be differant. Keep in mind the 305 was built as a eco engine but all the performance parts for it such as the heads, carb, intake, etc will interchange with a 350ci so the investment is worth it if you do deside to get a 350 you already have the performance parts. Also just for insperation there is a guy here local that built a 2.5L 4cyl iron duke from a s-10 with 380hp. So dont ever let any one tell you you cant do it or use this engine instead.

Just my 2 cents

In 1976, the 305ci engine was introduced, which must be the most plentiful engine in existence so parts are easy to come by

The 350 has been around since the late 60s. Actually parts are very comparable in price, if not the same. I had a 305 for the longest time in my 88 Camaro. I replaced the cam and all that fun stuff and it still didnt have any power. Only to find out for the same price i could have bought a good running 350, which if built correctly will have three times the potential with matching parts.

confederate1, how much money did the guy with the iron duke spend to get that 380 hp? If going for cost effectiveness the 350 is bar non the best engine EVER produced. In the category of small blocks that is.

chevyman24,

I'm not sure of the money the guy spent but I do know the Iron Duke is a Pontiac engine and is a knockoff of one of there old v8's.just like have the engine.I do know the guy had his own machine shop and he modifided a Pontiac 301 head and used it on the engine.ie that is where the power came from im sure.
