You should be able to run it as is with an overdrive control unit. The overdrive unit is controlled by the computer, which you dont have in your nova. these control units cost from 80 to 200 dollars. The higher end ones have a brake switch to control the overdrive. If you dont install an overdrive control you will ruin the trans. It will overheat. You also have to have the detent cable setup right. This cable is not a kickdown cable like you would see in a th350 or 400. the detent cable controls the hydraulic pressure of the trans itself and without it hooked up the trans will shift very hard and very high in the rpm range which end up ruining the trans.

Thats what you need is a lock-up kit.  I bought mine through Bowler transmission(197.00 with shipping), but TCI, B@M,and painless wiring also make them. Summit Jegs has them in stock and will probobly be the cheapest. The detent cable is NOT a kickdown cable. It technically does kick down the trans but it doesnt work the same as a kickdown for the th350 or 400. It controls the hydraulic pressure of the trans fluid. With a 700 the cable must be hooked up or you will destroy the trans. It hooks up to the carb like the throttle. Google detent cable or 700r4, that will give you more info than i can tell you.
