The engine and transmission seem to be at a slight angle to the chassis of the vehicle. I have replaced the 235 / powerglide setup in my 62 Impala with a 350 / 700R4. I used the original engine mounts from the 235 (they fit perfect after removing the top  6 cyl adapter section).  The tranny needs a small modification at the mount to fit the original crossmember. I will have to cut the forward drive shaft to fit the new installation.

How criticle is this angle and what is the best way to set this angle?

You should have no problem with the 700R4, I put one in my 69 Malibu and the only thing I had to do was shorten the driveshaft and watch the clearance between the top of the tranny and the body. Your 2 pc. drive shaft should be at the same angle it was with the old tranny, shims between the crossmember and trans mount will change the angle, using a magnetic angle finder will get you the proper angle. I don't know what that angle is for your car but I'm sure a transmission shop will have the info for you. And yes, the angle is kind of critical, for u joint life.
