Hi,I have a 1989 Camaro RS with a 305 TBI and a five speed. I recently pulled the motor and trans, planning on doing an overhaul, but I was wondering what kind of performance stuff is out there for that motor? I found a stroker kit that will add like 30 cubic inches. I'm not sure on what kind of heads I should use. I mean is 64cc's okay? Or no? Really what I'm shooting for is 400 hp, or as close as I can get. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Build a 350 400hp will be easy.

400 horsepower is a bit of a lofty goal for a 305 actually, a stroker crank may help some, but it will help very little...

Everyone is going to bash the 305 and say get a 350, that's just how it is.

Best thing is to look at your budget, and figure out what you can afford without breaking yourself. If you've got the money to build a 350 for your Camaro, build a 350. If you don't, then the stroker kit for the 305 is a decent option. It probably won't make 400 HP, but it'll make a ton of torque that'll make your Camaro really fun to drive, though I'd defintiely recommend subframe connectors from someone like BMR to stiffen the chassis.

When figuring your budget, don't forget to set aside money for a trans rebuild.

I'm not bashing the 305, but it would be cheaper and more effective to get a used vortec 350, go through it, replace the cam and valve springs with a mild cam.440 lift or less, put a performer intake and a 600 cfm carb, than it would be to get a stroker crank have all the machine work done, and adapt the TBI to supply 400hp.

Read through some of this.  http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/engine-swap/382827-has-anyone-board-built.html
