I Picked up a 71 chevelle that Has the 307sb in it about 6 months ago and have been building a 355sb to replace it. ( I am almost done except buying a cam and installing it ) over the holiday I came across a 427 tall deck out of a grain truck I do believe . Well I couldnt do without everyone needs a 427 BBC talldeck laying aroud right . So now I am wondering if I can make this 427 BBC produce enough power/toruge by changing just the cam and intake to outperform the 355 ?

tall deck 427 have a deck height of .400 over your typical BBC this was to accommodate pistons with a 4th piston ring to improve life and reduce blow by in hard use applications such as extreme weight of a grain truck under load. they dont have high compression and they typically have very small port heads. the block itself would be good for a stroker motor if it checks out at the machine shop and they say it could be bored out to say 4.5 inches for a 540. but if you built a decent 350 then you are better off with that. just changing a cam and intake on an engine doesnt make enough of an improvement to justify the swap. its a total package. if your heads cant support the cam and intake then it would just be wasted effort.
if the block checks out you could use it for a stroker application or theoretically you could use a .400 longer rod and stock car 427 pistons if you wanted a 427.
also all grain trucks 366 and 427 had forged steel crank shafts so the crank would work if you tried a 427 build.

I would stick to the 355.
