I am building a 383 using a '99 roller cam block with a small base circle cam. My plan is to use factory lifters with the stock retainer system. When the cams is on it's base the lifters seem a little low in the dog bone. Has anyone run a small base circle cam with stock lifters?

Am I correct in that you mean you want to use an aftermarket Cam (ie: Crane ,comp cams etc) with GM lifters? If so I would strongly suggest against it. Cam and lifters should both be from same manuf. You could contact the cam maker (if A/M) and ask them if ok to use GM lifters, my guess would be a big "don't do it".

I agree, I think it's a good idea to use a matched set. Call your cam manufacturer and ask their opinion.

The Cam is a Crane custom grind roller. I am considering using stock style Crane roller lifters lifters. My concern is with lifter height with a small base circle cam.

If your retainers clear and the oil band is not too low I don't see why you would have any problems.

I believe the oil band will be ok. The base circle of the cam is .900 compared to apox 1.140 for stock. The oil hole in the lifter wall is completely open when the cams is on it's base and partially open at full lift. At it's lowest point the lifter is .115" into the dog bone retainer. A standard base cam would be about .250" into the dog bone. I think the lifter is in the retainer enough to keep it from turning. But I am looking for other opions or anyone who has used a small base circle cam. Thanks
