Chevlle SS Designer Speaks!

Hello Chevy High Readers! This is Mark Takahashi, the Chevy High Art Director who put  the '05 Chevelle Concept together.  I was just looking through all of the responses and I am overjoyed to see how passionate the readers are on the concept design (and yes, it's even good to hear the criticism).

When we embarked on this project we wanted to use the Hot Rod / Thom Taylor sketch as a starting point from which to base or concept on. At the same time, we wanted to base the concept as close to the GTO as possible so if we made an actual prototype or production model, the price would be well below that of Porsches and Ferrari's. I also wanted to produce a design that would appear to fit into the current Chevy lineup without alienating the actual designers.

I can't say where we're going with this project next because we are in ongoing negotiations with certain parties, so we'll let you draw your own conclusions (hint, hint!). But wouldn't it be great to have a Chevelle SS out there to blow the doors off of those BMW M5's, Subaru WRX's and Mustangs?

So keep your letters coming, it's the only way we'll get this thing produced.

KEEP BOOGYIN' MARK!!  I OWN THREE VETTES('72,'85,'03), A '71 SS EL CANINO AND AN '03 BLACK TAHOE Z71(ENHANCED W/ Z06 CAM & VALVE SPRINGS, JBA HEADERS, MAGNAFLOW DUAL EXHAUST & POWERDYNE SUPERCHARGER).  I LOVE MY HOT RODS, BUT I DON'T HAVE ENOUGH OF THEM.  I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO THE POSSIBILITY OF ADDING A NEW CHEVELLE SS TO MY FLEET.   I AM A SALES MANAGER AT A LARGER CHEVY DEALER IN THE DENVER AREA, AND WOULD BE PROUD TO MARKET SUCH A PRODUCT, AS WELL.  YOU'VE GOT MY VOTE!!!  WHAT WE NEED IS A "BOWTIE REVOLUTION".

I AM A CHEVY MAN AND HAVE HAD A '68 CHEVELLE AND CURRENTLY HAVE AN '82 CAMARO INDY PACE CAR. I BELIEVE THE '05 CHEVELLE IS ONE OF THE GREATEST IDEAS CHEVY HAS COME UP WITH SINCE THE SS CAMARO. IF THIS CAR IS CREATED AS SAID I WILL BE ONE OF THE FIRST IN LINE TO SPEED AWAY FROM THE DEALERSHIP IN MY NEW SS.

Mark,

I was lucky enough to own the legendary '70 LS6 Chevelle.(ordered new) This concept needs to be pushed through to restore the Chevelle to its former glory. I presently have a '70 LT-1 and '71 LS-7 (Yes it is an LS-5 car with the crate engine, al. heads, dual-clutch, M-22) Corvette. I have seen no need to by anything new hi-performance wise. But with this concept car."If you build it, I will buy it."

Yes, by all means BUILD THAT CAR.  I would by one for myself, my wife  and I know my son would buy one.  I own an original 1965 Chevelle SS L79 model with the 327/350 hp. engine.  I have had this car since new and I love it.  I own a 1996 Impala SS and love it too.  But the new 2005 Chevelle SS Concept is gorgeous!

This car is needed in Chevy's line-up to provide a reasonably priced rearwheel drive car that young people CAN AFFORD to buy.  Especially since the Camaro's demise.

Tell Chevrolet's top management to build this car.

I almost can't believe it.  An 05 chevelle!  Imagine the look on a mustang owner's face when you pull up next to him at a light!  I think the new design gives the respect the original deserves.  If GM builds one, I am going to buy it.   It isn't too gaudy and has a subtle but muscular stance.

Love the whole car except the back.  its too plain.  it needs a spoiler or something to dress it up.

In my opinion, this rendition of a 2005 Chevelle SS is a travasty.  No side body lines, an Impalla front clip, Ford F-150 taillights, and an extremely boring back end.  The 70' Chevelle doesn't need a spoiler to make it hot!!  Neither should a 2005!   This Chevelle is a disgrace to even call a Chevelle!  Not only that, but, 350 HP?  A mustang Cobra has 390 and is lighter.  I'm a Chevy guy through and through and the last thing I want is a less than stellar, poor excuse of a Chevelle that won't even smoke a mustang.  The GTO looks like a souped up grand am.  Can you say LAMO!!!  GM discontiued the F-body's then came out with this GTO bastard from Austrailia that is ill handling and not as fast as the F-body's were.  Someone at the GM headquarters needs to pull there collective heads out of their a$# and look at what Ford is doing with the mustang and the GT-40.

If you are such a Ford guy, why are you wasting your time reading about Chevys?????. The 05 Chevelle is a great concept car, and a 350 is more than enough for a real man who knows what he is doing, which obviously, you dont, and need to have more power to make up for what you lack. Well you better go get your Mustang, so you can be like all the rest of the lamos......

Hey master(bater) monte, its guys like you that need to be tied to the back of a Chevy and drug around for about an hour, I know quite a few women that would smoke your ass in anything from a race to building cars, it aint a mans world anymore when it comes to cars, get out of the 30's and step into the new world.

As for the 05 Chevelle, 3 simple words OH HELL YES, GM make this car TODAY! I own a 65 Chevelle with a 350 with a 500 hp shot of nitrous on top of it, I would love to park an 05 right next to it. Hey can you guys make the cowl 4 inches and paint one white for me to match mine? I'll do the rest of the mods after she comes home.

Keep on the fast track with this one mark.I own a 71 BB chevelle and let me tell you there's nothing like getting behind the wheel of an earth ripping pavement pounding road warrior. We lost the camaro we lost the firebird and a lot of other great mighty machines,i feel that this new 05 chevelle should be built to reclaim the king of the hill.If GM fails to produce this car, then the competition will crush you. It's time for chevrolet to open the door and unleash the beast. This 05 chevelle would look awsome parked in my driveway next to it's 71 brother.

Hey I agree with Monte.  This car should be more like the good ol' days.  This looks like a damn Cavalier!  That's riduclous.  You're exactly right about the new Mustang.  I'm not much of a Ford man myself.  But, atleast they have tried to capture the older look and it is an impressive looking car.  It seems to me Chevy has decided to try and put away the competition with gas mileage and high-tech equipment, not with raw power and looks.  To me the Chevelle was the most powerful and meanest muscle car built in that era.  If I had to just absolutely choose in one of the two with the chevelle looking that way, I would go with the new mustang.  Now, if they made this car look closer to the older models and placed the LS-6 with a supercharger I would bye it.  But, not like this.  I would say only the most die hard chevy fans will be impressed enough with this car and would bye it.  But, it will not attract new comers and new buyers!!!!!!!  And most of all, it will not attract anyone from the otherside (Ford, Chrysler, etc.).

I hope you don't expect to sell many of these.  This is ridiculous!!  Come on man, can't you do better this?  First, the GTO.  You say you're bringing it back.  Well, where is it?  All I see is this Grand Prix that has a few modifications on it with the GTO name plate on it.  What are you thinking?  Now, this?  A Chevelle SS (Cavalier body with a bigger engine.).  Ok, I have to say, you've had your fun with the GTO, now it's time for someone to do their JOB and produce a concept that will attract the competition.  I can't believe that people like this.  Only die hard fans will like it.  I love chevy and my most favorite car is the Chevelle.  I have been waiting forever for this to happen.  Now I see this junk!  I have waited for a big SLAP in the face?  This is absolutely disgusting.  Stop worrying about fuel consumption and high tech looks and join the crowd.  The old days were more about power and sharp looking cars.  The faster the better.  Quick question.  How many Chevelles sold in the 68 to 72 Era?  Remember how plan it was?  Now look at yours.  All futuristic and just crapy.  And another thing, grow some b@lls and get away from the cars that you're reproducing as something else and create a new body and frame.  Using the same set up for a Grand Prix for the GTO and the Cavalier for the Chevelle, just doesn't cut it.  I know why you keep doing that.  To save money.  Are you worried about what people spend?  What's a new Cavalier sell for?  About $18000 for one with everthing?  Ok, now shouldn't this Chevelle sell for about the same?  I can see maybe a price range of about $21000 for this, only because of the engine.  That's another thing.  This engine is ok, but to put 350 hp in this as a SS, no good.  It should be about 425 hp.  Atleast that would get the wheels turning in others heads.  I can promise you this, if you produce this car, you will not be as successful as the new Mustang.  Besides, isn't beating the comp. the idea here?  Trying to attract the competitions buyers?  Please I beg you reconsider this and make this car more powerful and have more of the looks of the older Chevelles.

Look guys (and girls).  I'm not in here to make enemies and call names.  All I wanted to get across to all of us die hard Chevelle lovers is this:  The 60's and 70's Chevelles were all totally awsome and bad to the bone in every way.  This rendition of the Chevelle just doesn't really live up the the badness, aura, just plain aggressive look of the older Chevelles we love.  Like this:  look at the boring flat sides of the 2005.  Then look at the bulging fenders and quarters of the 70.  The taillights of the 67 were cool and pointy.  The 2005's look like they stole them from the latest F-150 and stuck em in there.  The horsepower (although some may think its adequate) should be more than anything else produced.  At least give the option for more ponys!!  Like they did in the 70's.  You could get a 396(402 really) or 454!!  Don't even get me started on the interior.  I don't think anything in it looks retro.  Who know's, maybe it wasn't meant to.   GM has lost my love right when they discontinued the F body.  It could very well be rekindled in an awesome looking Chevelle remake but, not like this one.
