Chevlle SS Designer Speaks!

You should really get your facts straight before you start making accusations.  The new GTO is based on the Australian Holden Monaro, a GM subsidiary.  350 horses is pretty respectable considering many of the 396 SS Chevelles were rated at 325 and 360 horses.

I totally agree with you MasterMonte.  A new Camaro is what they need.  One that is retro like the Mustang will be.  I am a seriously Chevy person and allways will be.  I must give the new Mustang it's props.  It is a awesome looking car.  Maybe GM will step up to the plate and give us a new muscle car and not a sooped up Grand Am or Cavalier.

I was looking for a buildup article, and i stumbled across this thread so here's my 2 cents.  First off, the concept behind the gto and chevelle is great.  However, i do have a couple gripes.  First off, they're too expensive.  You can get a mustang gt with 300 horse for 22-24 new if not cheaper.  You can also get a '03 cobra for 38, which would probably stomp that gto.  The car is just too expensive for most of us younger guys. One of the reasons the mustang has always been so popular is that it was affordable and versatile.  Honestly, if i was going to spend 30 grand, i'd go get a 67 gto wreck, and build it to where i want it.  The only other problem i have is the lack of style in the cars.  I'm sure plenty of work went into designing them, but to be honest, they just don't look like muscle cars.  *Ford* is making a retro mustang, and it's a hit even with the hard-core chevy guys i know.

By the way, if any of you guys are going to rip me up for liking fords, get over it.

Ok, I need to get my facts straight.  Well, you need to also.  Look at what your letter said, a GM affiliate.  It's the same thing as when GM sold the body of the S-10 to Sizuki and it became the Embre.  Now, the Austrlian Company is making the Grand Prix body a GTO.  Just look at it!  It's exactly like it!

Build it, price it in the low $20,000's, and they will come.

I have been waiting for 17 years for someone to come out with a replacement for my 1987 SS Monte Carlo Aerocoupe. And every year I get dissapointed.

Please, someone tell me that they are joking.  As if the new Pontiac Sunfire, I mean GTO isn't embarrasing enough, now they want to destroy the Chevelle name.  All of you who said they want a strong new car cheaper than the Vette to beat Ford, I agree but don't call this souped up Cavalier a "Chevelle".  I was at a Car rally and some classic GTO owners had to bear it when a new GTO came and parked by them.  Am I going to have to go through that same agony with my '67 Chevelle.  To make matters worse, how is it supposed to compete with Fords Mustang.  The Stang is cheaper, they are going to bring back a retro look and for all intensive purposes will have models that are going to be faster than this new Cavalier (I cannot bring myself to call it a Chevelle).

The Chevelle emboddied classic lines and power, not just a big motor strapped into some weak looking body with no character.  The Chevelle was a big machine, full size... no one ever considered it a pony.  This new car looks like a pony car ready to go head to head with the mustang.  If you are going to bring back the name put it in a bigger body and try to incorporate some of the old lines.  Some time ago I saw the Chevy Bel Air concept, you had something there.  It was old and new.  This new Cavalier is neither, it is a regulated vette heart in a jazzed up Cavalier.   Ford and Chrysler are bringing back retro and Chevey is loosing hard, it hurts me to see this.

Please try again or just give it a different name.  Respect those of us who have kept the real Chevelles alive, not just in name.

Dude u guys should seriously build this car and i agree that it needs to have something done to the backend to spice it up a little bit.  And for u guys that say that its just a cavelier, well now adays the sport compact cars are the popular cars so y not make a sport compact that has an LS6 in it?

I just wanted to say i'm all for bringing the chevelle back. I've had a 69 chevelle and currently own a 69 chevelle conv. the only thing i have a problem with is the 05' chevelle looks alittle eurosporty, which we don't want, and kinda looks like a cavilier. Put a new style of chrome rallys on it , then we're talkin.......

Look just to set the record straight this is coming from a chevelle owner not some guy who has no respect or pride in the chevelle and its history. To try and bring about a rebirth of the chevelle is ridiculous. To answer your question NO it would not be "great to have a Chevelle SS out there to blow the doors off of those BMQ M5's Subaru WRX's Mustangs (and the rest of those pieces of ####)." Why, you might ask. Because it is already out there. Ill im saying is put aside your notion of thinking that it would be cool to bring  back the chevelle cause it wouldn't. All you guys are doing is spoiling the great name of the Chevelle. I don't understand why you guys have to keep trying to resurect the older muscle cars. They are not the same and nothing you can do will make them that way. So LEAVE THEM ALONE. For crying out loud have you run out of ideas that you must resort to trying to bring back the past? If that is the case them they should get some new people like myself to come and work for them. You are ruining the pride that those of us who have these cars hold dearly. These cars hold great sentimental value to those of us who have them. All these people voting for the new chevelle don't have a clue. How many of them do you think know or understand truly what a Chevelle is. How many do you think have ever gone for a ride in one. I seriously doubt very many. They think "oh wow it's a Chevelle and it has the little SS symbol and an Ls1, that's hot ####" well im telling you it isn't. And anyone who does think so knows nothing about the feeling, pride, and  sense of value a true chevelle has. If this car does hit the streets it will be a sad day indeed. I will sale my chevelle despite having devoted two years of my life to it's reproduction. Why? Because YOU will have ruined it for me. Please leave it alone. If anything build the damn car i don't care but don't name it a chevelle, because it isn't and never will be.

Hello my name is matt and i'm just as excited as you are about the chevelle coming back into production. when i heard about Fords little secret weapon they've been conjuring up for the chevy gearheads i wasn't sure if you guys were going to step it up well you guys responded but not with the artillary i was hoping for,....let me start by saying that i own two chevelles, one i've had since i was 16, a 1970 w/a 400 SB, and the other a 72 SS w/a 454 BB both are pavement pounders and i look forward to seeing that new dodge SRT-10 pulling up at the light next to me later on down the road....500HP,  4:10 gears ratio,  6 speed,...that thing is a monster!!! and so should the Chevelle SS, why can't you guys put those numbers on this bad boy, the chevelle wasn't made for fuel economy, it has the SS stamped on it so it should live up to that........what SS means to me is....Power, Respect, Stance, Sound, Looks, & Attitude, i love the fact that you guys are making the attempt at Awakenking a Mean Street Machine that demanded respect whenever pulling up to another vehicle with a lumpity lump cam and all the goods to back up that bark that could make any person sitting in the vehicle along side this thing just LOOK and not even think about  Challenging IT!!!!  the Chevelle is a demanding classic musclecar, the design you've come up with is too Retro, the corvette has kept it's classic look even now it still has all the characteristics of a what an SS is and should be.

don't go off of the GTO's design, i wasn't impressed with that design at all,....only the numbers are going to speak for that thing, the look is just another Grand prix w/a similar body kit i went to the chat rooms discussions and someone said it looked like a cavalier with SS stamped on the grill,  it really does, the rear looks too boxy, it doesn't have the accented lines that the chevelle does, do you own a Chevelle? have you ever ridden in one?  c'mon i know you can come up with something that'll impress the hell out me and thousands of other gearheads out there, we want what ford did with that fastback, more old school less retro,....if i were to be purchasing one of these i would buying the name as well as the look of the chevelle not some look alike car that doesn't stand out,....i know you said you don't want to alienate this thing but i swear if you do, {that is make this thing closer to looking like a 70 chevelle SS it will sell ,  what about the accenting line of the body where are those they make up the car as well. i love the way the rear looks in the  drawing but it looks really different in the picture, the lines and body creases are missing thats why.   what happened to the marker lights on the rear quarters just like the old school. it's almost like the 01 Monte Carlo SS, the rear looks pretty sweet, you can tell it's a Monte Carlo from a distance away, that spoiler on the back is a dead give away,....and so should the chevelle i really like it but there is places for improvement, the marker lights {where'd they go}front and rear , love the stripes, the SS emblem strip on the rear, did it not look right when it was on the bumper?....the creases on the rear mostly, and the front quarter panels,.... the edges...like i said the drawing had them,  the rear is too rounded, the drawing looks wider and a little bit more square  like i said the distinctive characteristics, i'm sorry this sounds nothing more than a tear down of the car, and i know you have probably drawn more than 50 of these drawings before you  took it up to the head honcho and have probably stared at the Old Chevelle forever when you were creating  your creation it's almost there just needs a little more attitude and look less like the cavaleir and any other car around today not like the GTO or any other new car look , think about this if the Chevelle had never faded away and was still around, keep in mind that the corvette never changed much, {because it has that distinctive look!!} what would it look like today? keep in mind that it still looks very similar to it's original body.......i've probably repeated myself many times but i know what i want and many others want,....not the new car look that Pontiac gave their prized GTO, do something different  i think you should follow Fords example of a more old school look than retro....i'm sorry it was more negative than positive, best of luck

thanks for your  time

i still love you guys

C'mon look at it, it truly is a cavaier an roids. If it is going to be "returned to its glory" (and it still remains glorious and shouldnt be rebuilt) give it some F-ing balls. the main reason all of you all want the "new and improved" version is because your all to scared to get you damn hands dirty and buy an original one. this revised chevelle is a disgrace to a legacy. if it is going to be put out for sale make it look more like the original and maybe you could change the minds of those who dont like your S#!tty design.

After talking up this design early on in this nice little discussion, I have to admit that I feel like a creep backing down on it. But, after reading over the latest discussions, I do very much understand that you guys that actually bought these cars new, and actually drove them are pissed. The chevelle was a bitchin example of all-american muscle, and it should be kept that way, and GM, this design is not the way to go. 35 grand for a rebadged Holden Monero... Great!

Guys my age just cannot afford your latest, odd looking excuses for muscle cars. So, speaking directly to GM- I know you probably dont give a flying fart what a dumb-ass 19 year old kid thinks, but I'm going to say it anyway, take this design, tear it up, burn it, and instead of listening to the oohs, and aahs of the snobby idiots at car shows, listen to what the average joe thinks. We don't want an australian built piece of crap that will dissolve like a dog's turd in a downpour, we want a real american built car that will bring back that all american "I'm a badass" look that mysteriously left vehicles of all makes in the late 70's and 80's I'm talkin four headlights, the famous ss stripes, bulging fenders, chrome, magnum wheels, white letter tires, and last but not least, throw in a 8100 bigblock V8 coupled with a six- speed trans and price it at 25 to 30 grand. I'm not asking that you simply build a replica of a classic car, all i'm asking is that you build a new car with a retro appeal. I know you can do it and so do you. Something that will not tarnish a classic nameplate and will make all bow-tie fans, past and present, proud. Do that, and BUYERS WILL COME, and then you truly WILL have AN AMERICAN REVOLUTION...

The 05 Chevelle concept is an interesting car.  Maybe not the Chevelle of old but substantially better than anything Chevy currently sells.  With the exception of the Corvette, Chevy does not have any true muscle cars.

Chevy is supposed to be a car for the masses.  If the Chevelle prices out around 35K as the article suggests, they may as well forget about producing it.  They need to build it and keep it reasonable.

I'm a diehard Chevy guy, but if they don't build something like this or a "retro" Camaro soon, I'm more likely to buy something off of  Ford (sorry for the profanity) lot than a Chevy dealer.
