I'm in the process of ordering parts for a 406 build-up.  I want an oil pan with more capacity then stock - 6 to 7 quarts.  The guy at the machine shop told me to make sure I got a pan that was clearanced for the 400 stroke.  Is it true that the 400 requires a different, or modded, pan than other small-blocks?

I was looking at a Summit 7 qt. pan and pickup.  If this won't fit can someone suggest where I can go to find an extra-capacity pan?

Thanks,

John

Milodon, Moroso, Hamburger, etc. I have seen all these brands on 3.75 stroke small blocks without "alteration".  I have to assume that they make these higher volume oilpans keeping in mind the popularity of the 3.75 (or larger) stroke small blocks.

The oilpan on my chevelle is a kickout style chrome Milodon. I had to "re-clock" my mini-starter to clear it, which moved it closer to the header. Moroso makes a larger capacity that doesn't "kick out", but depending on what kind of car it's going in, ground clearance may be an issue, as the added capacity on this pan moves the bottom of it down toward the ground.

The only Summit brand pan I have ever dealt with was a stock type replacement I put on my first 355.... I had to clearance it with a hammer for the stock 3.48 stroke .... Pay a few extra bucks and get a brand name.

As you see, crank/rod clearance is not all you have to worry about. Good luck

Thanks!  That's the information I was looking for.  I was beginning to wonder if I should start looking for a different machine shop.  I'll take your advice and get a brand name pan.  The application is a Blazer so ground clearance won't be an issue.  You've brought up another question:  will a kicked out pan cause interference issues with a stock starter and headers?

I ended up ordering the Moroso #20160 7 qt. pan.  Application is for a 4x4 and I think it will work fine.  Thanks for the response.
