i have a 85 monte carlo ss it currently has the 305 in it. i have a 1970 350 2bolt main out of a monte carlo that im looking to put in it.. im going to bore it .030 over and take it back with a stock kit except some stuff. what later model heads i can use on it with unleaded gas that would give me good power?factory this had 250hp. i have a edelbrock rpm intake,a holly performer 600cfm,flow tech headers, flowmasters, performance hei dis. what cam should i use without making changes to the heads?what size torque converter would go good with the 200 4r trans? about what would the horse power be by doing this stuff to it? this is a daily driver but i want more pep for my step.

The big question is if you need to keep it emission legal.I live in N.Y and I have a local inspector who just asks me what is wrong with it.I have always told him nothing.People critize me for "over maintaning my vehicles. You need to make sure of what testing your state does.Your stock converter should stall @2000 if the 305 is in fair shape. The 350 will stall a little higher with the same converter.Your stock heads could allready have hardened seats .Some trusks had them back then. But with the 2 barrel on your engine they are only 1.72-1.50 valves. But could be 194 also sometimes they just put on what they had.Dont foreget the 305 is rated at the transmission with all accesories on NET.H.P .The 350 was rated gross back in 1970 .Therefore the 305 is really putting out like 200 gross.I have seen sb 400s in SS s before with most of the stock 305 components put back on running 13sec. Quarter mile times What do you want out of it ? It is hard to get the best of both worlds. Are we talking like a solid 15.00 car that gets 25 mpg? You should decide on your heads before selecting your pistons. The vortec heads seem to be the ticket. Yu coud even check the salvage yard for sme.

Vortec heads are great but they would require the purchase of a new intake manifold. I think the 2000 rpm stall speed is a little optimistic with a 305 as well. Everything I have ever read or heard puts stock GM stall in the 1300-1600 rpm neighborhood depending on engine.

I am pretty sure the buick grand nationals, camaro, firebird and the ss all got high stall converters.I think the price of the vortec intakes have come down to around 200.My friend took a small stone on a die grinder and did this to a brand new holley intake. He used small hollow round stock and ground it ata angle. This made my stomach turn but I guess it worked. The reason for the high stall speed on the grand national is to get the rpm up high enough to get the turbo bost started .All the other 305s with the vin gode G have a lot of duration in the cam for the small displacement of 305.So the power curve is shifted up in the rpm range. They make less off idle torque then the common H code engine but more uper rpm horsepower .
G 305=180 H.p @ 4400rpm
H 305 165 H.P @3800 OR SOMETHING TO THIS EFFECT
I am not saying yours will stall @ 2000 right now but I think if it was a brand new car it would.ANYONE ELSE HELP ME WITH THIS/
