Its been a while sinse I worked on chev v8s...my 16 year old got a junker 84 z28 (305?) to work on but he got all the wires crossed changing the cap. I don't remember which location on the dist cap starts the firing order. I think it was... looking at the motor from the cockpit the 11 oclock position on the cap and moves clockwise cy; 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2. The drivers side cyldrs from the radiator back are cyl 1,3,5,7. Is this correct? Help.

Yes ,from the front of the engine on the left side ( everything is refered to as sitting in the drivers seat) 1,3,5,7, right bank 2,4,6,8,.Any doubt on where to put no.1 line up the notch on the harmonic balancer with the the 0 on the timming cover You may need to clean off the dirt and oil on the two of them too see. If your son has moved the distrubitor you may need to reset the timming once it is running.Did you just buy the car? Has someone allready done a hack job on everything?Dont be too hard on your son. Just tell him to slow down and think things through before dooing anything .When we are young we tend to be in a hurry.
