i love novas! prob with offering advice is lack of vehicle weight.comp has a line of n2o cams that are fantastic. you don't have to be on the bottle to reap the bennies of these grinds. i recently built a similar combo using 12-556-8 the thing pulls like gang busters and is fun to drive milage is good idle has a cocky sound and many people stop just to find out what it'll take to get that sound out of their own vehicle. they are ground on a 113 deg lda and provide nice wider torque bands. the magnum series cams are 20 plus year old tech. they are good cams... but tech has come a long way. good luck keep the sport alive.

I think she wheighs between 3,000 and 3500. I looked at the AFR web page and they use a comp cam 270H and they claim 430HP at 5,000RPM on a 355cid. It looks like they flow a little more on the exhuast. The darts flow 4cfm more on the intake. I don't think I should have a problem makeing the same power. Go to http://ryanscarpage.50megs.com/combos1.html for engine combos. Thank you for your help! I was also thinking about a solid lifter cam. What are your thoughts on that? I don't drive her more than 3,000 miles a year. I wouldn't think they would need ajusted more than once a year. Any help is welcome.

there are some pros and cons to the solids, pros are the "racy" vavetrain noise, cons are the periodic adjustmaent. ...now don't read too much into that adjustment stuff, if you only get into the throttle occasionally it may need checked twice a year a so. really no big deal to car guys. another consideration in the comparision of solids and hyds. is that solids typically need 10 deg more dur. @.050 than thier hyd counterparts to offer the same performance. another often overlooked portion of the spec card on solids is th failure to consider the subtracdtion of lash. example a cam with .300 lobe lift and a 1.5:1 rocker results in .450 lift, however solids require lash and lets use .020 as a nice round figure. so theoreticaly .450 lift becomes .430 actual valve lift, get it? any thing i may be able to help with please let me know. i love small blocks and i love hear 'em go! good luck keep the sport alive!

I would recommend a Comp Xtreme Energy series cam on the lower end of the spectrum with your "stockish" stall converter. Your combo sounds a lot like mine with about the same displacement, weight, trans, intake, and final gear ratio in my 355 S-10. I run the the smallest Xtreme Energy cam with around .432/.444 lift and under 218 degrees at .050 of duration. This cam makes killer low end torque and does not fall on it's face up high. A lot of people like the 268 grind in this series. I have vortec heads and a 600 Edelbrock on my engine. It has run a 8.79 in the eighth mile.

I would like to see some flow numbers on your heads. I think my are probably better and would benifit from a little bigger cam. I think i can get about the same torque as the AFR combo. 470 pounds at 4500 and 430 HP 5000, With the Comp Cams Magnum 270H.

I believe the numbers should be in a database on this site.

nova, hey man!
just readin' along and was thinkin' if the vortecs haven't been cut up by local shops (the stock valve job is fantastic) intakes haves a 30 deg back cut helping low lift flow no.s but they stall at .500 ish lift and @ 28 inches h2o usually fall in the 230's ,nice cc's, and an effcient ex. make 'em a great deal off the shelf. but stay away from "machine shop specials" as it is easy to drop those no.s messing with seat con fig. if you're handy clean up the casting line on back side of bowl and roll that short side in a little nicer you'll love the things. port cleanup sould probly be left to opening the pinch at the push rod. it'll pay off way better then gasket matching the intakes, they're felpro1204 ish anyway.

Most street engines wont use any thing past the .500 lift so 230 is not bad. What size intake runners and valves do they have? What is the price for an assembeled pair?

I looked at the vortecs at Summit and they are 800.00 dollars for a pair assembled and then you need a intake to match, thats anouther 240.00 . I reused my intake and got Dart Pro1's for 1200.00 . They will out perform the Vortecs and only cost 150.00 more.
