FIRST thing you need to do is close off any open lines! Dirt, moisture and god knows what else VERY BAD stuff. I'ts probbley to late it all depends what you are wanting with the A/C. What happned Do you know what a 1 Lb# can of R12 cost plus you will need more than 2Lbs OH I forgot the price one pound can some come with the oil all ready mixed with thr R-12 $30.00-$60.00 a can.
OR switch over the retro fit R-134. the Kit is not much $50.00-$80.00 for every thing.
But you still have to find out what the problem is that has your compressor laying on the work beanch.bad compressor clutch, bad comp. seals, leaking o ring TXV expancian valve just fix it.
Flush your ststem out there as a flush kit for it, than evacuate 30-min. Pull a vaccum 29-30 hg andhold vaccume for 15 - 30 min. gauge doesnt drop systsm should be sealed.Than charge systemwith the R-134 that came with the kit.
OR if you have a super classic that must run the factory stuff and have the money R-12 oh yah you also need a special license to buy R-12.
I hope this kind of helpped
Good luck

While I was going through that kind of trouble I'd go ahead and get the fittings to convert it to R-134a. I've done it to my Camaro with no probs. Just change the drier and orifice tube. A couple of certified AC techs have told me they change over with no complications. I recommend pag oil and I believe you need to put it in the top line to the dryer(not sure how much though). You'll also want to take it to a AC repair and have them pull a vacuum on it before you charge it to ensure it doesn't have leaks.
