Hi
I am in the UK and new to classic Chevy motoring and could use some assistance.
I have a 69 Chevelle with a 307 and powerglide trans ( not ideal but gas is $5.50 a gallon here). The engine seems to be stock but has had the air filter assembly replaced by an aftermarket chrome open element filter.
The car starts ok even if i leave it for a few weeks but when i drive it down the road and stop it does not want to pull out of junctions and tries to stall if i give it a lot of gas. If i also back off the throttle for a bend and put the gas back on it sounds like the engine cuts out but if i back off quickly and gently apply the gas it pulls away again. On the open road on a light throttle it runs fine. Is this the carb and could the air cleaner be a problem if other pipes have been disconnected ?
On another note i am looking to upgrade the drum brakes and manual steering. As Camaro's are more commom in the UK will anything from this model fit. I already have spindles and discs but not sure what else i need. I can move the current manual steering a quater turn with no direction change.

I take it you mean from the inlet manifold. Should i start the car and put some liquid near the joints to see if the engine runs differently.

Yeah, check the intake manifold bolt tightness, vacuum hoses, vacuum ports on the carburetor and the gasket at the base of the carburetor.

The 69 Chevelle, Nova and Camaro share front spindles, brakes, etc. This also holds for GM's Buick, Oldsmobile and Pontiac offerings equivalent to these cars for 1969. These mid-size platforms from 64 thru 71 are pretty interchangable.

Thanks for the advice guys. I tightened to the two screws at the back of the carb that go up into the base. They only moved a quarter turn but the running is better already. I may take it apart in the winter and replace the gaskets. The annual roadworthiness test we have to do in the UK went well this year and the 69 passed. The only warning was play in the steering box. I have tried adjusting this but it is not much better. As it is non assisted i would like to upgrade to power steering. I have heard i can get the parts from an 80's Camaro which are more common in the UK.
Can anyone advise exactly what parts i would need including hoses , brackets etc as i may contact one of the companies here who breaks cars.
Thanks
Mike
