I am building a motor 1970 Chevy 350 bored and stroked to a 383, mild cam, intake and headers nothing radical. I am changing over to HEI distributor. I know the gap (on the plugs) is twice as much on an HEI as compaired to the points type distributor. Which year 350 motor should I get plugs for? Does anyone recommend a good plug to start with?
Thanks Yall.

Stock GM, I think I can get my hands on a set of 2.02 heads, if not Im going with the 1.94 set. I plan to match the ports and do a little porting and polishing on the intake and heads.Thats all my pocket can handle at this time.

Don't waste your time polishing anywhere in the induction, infact, for the intake a rough surface is desirable. It is argued that the rough surface may also be desirable on the exhaust, even though some head porters still polish them. The best place for a polish if you have a lot of time on your hands is the piston top, valve faces, and combustion chamber.

Iron heads? AC Delco R45TS plugs are a good starting point. You can adjust heat ranges later if the need arises.
You can spend twice as much on fancy platinum plugs, but I don't think you get much (if any) performance advantage from them. They do last a lot longer however, so once your motor is broken-in and proven it doesn't lose or burn oil (which could foul plugs prematurely) go ahead and give them a try if you wish.

Hi
I also have a sbc with vintage heads and if your heads are of the old style then you will need to use plugs that have the little metal gasket so that it will seal to the head properly. As far as using an HEI, I would'nt gap them much beyond .045, unless you have upgraded to a higher out put coil than a stock HEI comes with.
