how would i get the old rod bolts out of the rods to put the new ARP ones in?

i am a mechanic but i never work on gasoline engines ,we are not a machine shop ,but i have about every other kind of tool there is,I am hoping there is a red neck way i can do this myself and not have to send my rods up to the city

i have a press and a soft jaw vice ,i am thinking about something along those lines.

today i gave a rod bolt a pretty good wack with a brass hammer while holding it in my hand,it did not budge so thats when i stoped.

can this job be done in the field or do i have to send them up to the machine shop?

thank you

You could probably change out the bolts by yourself but there is something more to it. When the bolts are replaced, the rods need to be resized. The rods are sized with the bolts in place and slight changes in the bolts will change the bore. That being said, let the shop change them and size the rods at the same time.

He's right, this is something best left to the machine shop, because if it's not done right, you'll end up with rod failure and/or spinning bearings.

the whole problem was that i had sent the rods up a few weeks ago to get the new pistons pressed on then a got the rod bolts.

i do not want to send the rods back up to the city to get the bolts pressed in. i think they will have to remove the pistons again then put teh bolts in then resize the rods then put the pistons back in. all of this is going to cost me more time and money.

today a threw a rod in the soft jaw vice and gave it a few harder love taps with a big brass hammer.just to see what would happen.

the rod bolts are not going to budge.

i have decided that i realy dont even need the new rod bolts.  I am going to just use whats on them

i am thinking of useing the new nuts though on the old studs. i dont think that will hurt anything.

if my hodge podge pile of ebay motors junk makes even makes 350 HP by the grace of god,i will be thriled. i think the stock rod bolts will be fine for this.
