I just bought a 87 SS monte carlo it has t tops all the SS stripes the 5.0 H.O. has SS emblim inside bucket seats shifter in floor fatory paint I bought the car to restore. MY ???? is my title does not have SS on it did chevy put SS on it or what I hate to sink money into it and find out its not a true SS. I went to carfax.com it had info but said nothing about SS if someone can tell if with title not saying SS it is or not a true SS. thanks.

bought mine at a police auction so I can't help you there, makes me wonder? IS MINE A "REAL" ss? I have a sheriffs title.  

It just depends on your state, as they send out new titles they some times switch things up, my Chevelles title says it weighs 2200 lbs.  oh don't I wish.  I have a wagon the title says is a sedan but the vin #'s are right.  You gotta love beurocracy.  I'd bet on real because there is not much of a diference in value on these monte's yet.  Unless it's that weird looking areo coupe.  Which is more valuable to many but much less so to me.  Did you get yours in that sweat silver they ran?

The only way to tell a true 4th Generation (1983 - 1988) Monte Carlo SS from a non-SS by the VIN alone is to look at the 8th digit of the VIN. This is the Engine Code. In 1983, that digit MUST be a '7' for the car to be a true SS. For 1984 through 1988 models, the 8th digit MUST be a 'G'. This signifies the car came with the L69, 305ci, 5.0L High Output V8 engine. SSs came with no other engine. Period.
