automatic shifter problems

Yes, yes, I know, a firebird is not a chevy, but it's close enough and I only trust chevy mechanics. My problem is with my automatic transmission. when i am cruising between 50 and 60 mph, the transmission jumps from a low gear to a high gear every few seconds. It usually does this the worst in overdrive, but it is also noticable in drive. So far it hasn't caused any mechanical problems but i am afraid that it could if it continues. Someone, please help me with this problem.

What year, engine, transmission? Jumps from which low gear to which high gear? Can you tell if you get converter lock up? I'm guessing at this from your words "overdrive" leads me to thing this is a later model 4 speed auto with locking converter.

sorry, bogie. I was not detailed enough in my description. The car is a 1991 Firebird Trans Am. You are right about the transmission and converter, and the gears seem to be jumping between second and third. I don't think the converter is locking up, but i could be wrong, i've never had that problem before and i don't know how to look for that problem. Thanks for your reply and again, sorry about the poor description. Edited 11/19/2003 4:40:42 PM ET by ccumachine (CCUMACHIN1)
