i have 16x8 wheels with 4 inches of back spacing with 255/50/16 drag radials on my 88 monte ss,  they are pretty close to rubbing the frame and they tuck in the wheel well nicely,  but i would imagine if you used 3 inches of back spacing you could probably use a 275/50 without sticking out of the wheel well

The other dude told you that the 16X8 with 4" back spacing on his Monte almost touch the frame, then that's the maximun amount of back spacing you can run. But going to a 3" back spacing will not help because all it will do is put the tire outside the fender. If you go with a wider rim keep the 4" back spacing that will limit the amount of tire sticking out of the fender. I think you can run 17"X9" with 275/40/17 drag radial. You will get good traction on the street and the track. I got 1.70   60" foot times at the track on my 88 IROC with 245/50/16 Nitto Drag Radial.
