Why so much lash?

Regardless, the lash tells us next to nothing about the cam itself. We will need some more details, such as: combustion chamber shape, combustion chamber volume, piston crown shape, compression ratio, and camshaft duration to name a few.

Since you're so hesitant to tell us anything about the engine I will give an equally questionable solution...

Put in 35° total with 15° initial (base).

The camshaft is such an important piece to the puzzle, so to speak, that nearly all builders have the specs long before and after an engine is running.

The easiest way to set timing with no specs.  Pull vaccuum line off the distributor and plug it off.  Turn idle screw in so the engine idles about 1000 rpm.  Put a vaccuum gauge on the engine and turn the distributor until the vacuum gauge shows the max reading.  Put a timing light on the engine and back the timing back off 2 degrees.  This will get you extremely close.  Wanna get any closer, tear the engine down, find out what's inside, or Put it on a DYNO
