Big Block rockers rubbing

Hi all,


I am hoping someone can help out.  I am a HS autoshop teacher and one of my students has a 66 Impala SS with a 396.  The top rockers (intake) are making contact with the side of the valve covers (not the top but the side).  I am not sure what can be causing this.  We have checked the rockers and they are factory stock and the studs are tight in the head.  We do not know what cam is in the engine but I didn't think that would cause the problem.  Any idea what may be causing this?  Thanks in advance,

p.s. Is there an easy way to tell oval port heads from Square port heads, he want to put an aftermarket manifold on.  Thanks again

I have a 396 in my 67 Chevelle I could hear a rocker knocking up against the top of the valve cover not the side. I replaced the short valve covers with tall ones and I don't hear it anymore. I don't know if this really helps with your question. But I can answer you second question.


The best way to find out if you have oval or rectangular ports is to look at the heads with the valve covers off and see if it say's Hi Perf GM marked. This label was on all of the big block heads that used large rectangular ports. Here is a list of all Big Block cylinder head castings numbers match it up with yours and you will know. I am betting that your casting number is 3909802 oval. Hope this helps!!!

Thanks! It answers my question on the oval port heads.  I think the rubbing is just a case of the covers "sagging" on the bolts and getting just enough travel that they are rubbing.
