What advice can I get about cold air intakes.

I recently installed a high performance 330 hp 350 in my 1994 Silverado 4X4. It is very powerful! . I already have a Turbo City high flow TBI and the high flow injectors along with the new E-prom chip, a  K&N filter and a performance exhaust (High flow cat and a Flowmaster) I know the OEM breather tube runs into the right wheel well. Will a cold air intake really make that much of a difference for the $200 or so that they cost?

Thanks for any responses.

That sounds like a real nice setup.  I have a 94' Suburban and was also searching for a cost effective cold air setup.  I found a book called:

Chevy Trucks: High Performance and Custom Modifications for Chevy/Gmc C/K Series Trucks

You can see it a Amazon.com at the following link: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1557883408/002-2537974-7077643?v=glance

I found it in a Booksamillion store and they have an article on a homemade cold air intake for our stock air cleaner setup.  The stock box between the air cleaner housing and the fender is only for sound attenuation, and it really restricts air flow.  Its good you already have a K&N air cleaner.  Now, cut out the section of tube between the round air cleaner housing and the flanged piece that attaches to the fender.  Connect the two with a 3" dia. section of PVC pipe and some dryer vent clamps and your done.  Since I did not buy the book I am going on memory, but I think with a K&N air cleaner the homemade setup was worth somewhere around 10 HP.

Good luck, Ed.  www.edgesz28.com

Hi there, I thought I would make a suggestion as to your cold air intake question. Instead of this type of intake you could throw away the box filter with the hose and just go with the open-air filter element like those on a carb. engine. This will provide DIRECT air-flow into the engine by bypassing the need for a hose altogether. Also you can add a TORNADO FUEL SAVER, which GIVES you 10 HORSES, and a 2 M.P.G. FUEL GAIN!! You can FURZTHER INCREASE your HORSES by installing a THROTTLE-BODY SPACER. These spacers fit under the throttle-body and WILL GIVE you up to 20 HORSES and 3-4 M.P.G. FUEL GAINS!! I have a Tornado, and I am also going to purchase a T.B. Spacer shortly! Always remember to NEVER NEGLECT these small, yet clever ways to gain some VITAL HORSES for your ride, because if it's SERIOUS POWER you want, than any clever way to achieve MORE HORSES out of any vehicle with any engine should be top priority! GOOD LUCK guys!! Let me know how it goes! Have a nice one!

Every 10 degree reduction of carb or injector inlet temp is worth about a .6% horsepower gain. If you assume underhood air temp is 180 degrees and out side air is 80 degrees, you've got a 6% power gain. For a 330 hp engine that's almost 20 horses up on the top end.

I did like you said. I got a 4" pipe and fitted it in place of the silencer. I can feel and hear the difference. When I get on it it sounds like an old big four barrel. Low roar from the tube. I think the engine is running a little cooler. I hope the gas milage improves, These gas prices are killing me! Doesn't OPEC know that high horsepower comes at a pretty high cost!

for the set up that I have (how much HP? , line below) I also added a K&N extreme air filter its a filter around the carb and the lid is also a filter and it feels awesome its like i was dragging another car ,but now I am going to get the swirly thingi  and add sum duct work to get fresh air from outside the hood, ill let you know (i dont know if its going to work , i live in vegas and its already 100 degrees)

Hey Extreme, How much commission are you making on these Tornado Fuel Savers?

I don't make any comissions on the tornados because I don't sell them, I just own one and am using it in my truck! I like it because I know it works! I have tracked my fuel economy and I am happy to report that when I filled my very next tank of gas after installing it, I had gained a total of 15 extra miles on my trip milage!!!! I also am happy to report a gain of 10 extra horses to the rear wheels!!!! I have had my tornado for over a year now and I will never take it out!!!! I recommend these to anyone looking to up their fuel economy and of course who could forget the extra horses!!!!

who did the chassis dyno work  for you to measure the rear wheel horsepower gain?

Hi there, I have not yet tested my truck on the dyno, but I'm almost positive that I have 10 extra horses cause it feels like it. I also know that my K&N Air filter gained me 10 horses cause that was the first thing I added, and also it was proven by tests with other trucks like mine. So that is why I believe I have 10 extra horses with the tornado, but of course I won't really know until I have had it dyno tested.

The more I hear about those tornadoes, the more I think it is all hype! With the car makers trying to meet EPA and federal guidelines for economy, I would think they would have something like that from the factory. It all sounds good when you read the package, but the $2.00 worth oF sheet metal those things are made of are worth just that. Let me know how your Dyno. tests go I would be very interested. As for the K&N filter I'm a firm believer in those. I've had mine for about 3 years now and would never think of replacing it!

Let's talk about those tornadoes for a minute. You are not a firm believer in those, but I'm one of those types of people who will try anything to find horsepower increases even if it's just 1 or 2. You see I beleive that every last, possible once of horsepower that you can get out of your vehicle is crucial to either making or breaking a performance car. So I decided after hearing about these tornadoes that I would try one for myself. With a gain of 15 total trip miles on my truck for every fillup, I won't take it out! Plus to know how they work is simple! The outside air travels into the air-filter box, then into and through the air-filter, then through the air-filter hose and through the tornado which causes the air to spin like a real-life tornado all the rest of the way into the engine. This allows the air and fuel to mix better causing my 15 extra trip miles and increased horses. But the only way to know that it worked was to try it. Who wouldn't want extra fuel milage and horses! It may sound like hype, but it's as real as a hot-fudge sundae! Please give them a try. I'll let ya know what my dyno results are when I have it tested.
