MY QUESTIONS DEAL WITH AN 80 MALIBU AND A 97 F-BODY LT1. SWAPPING THE LT1 OVER TO A CARB SETUP.THE MOTOR IS STOCK WITHOUT THE FUEL INJECTION SETUP,I KNOW ABOUT THE PLUG FROM GM TO PLUG OFF THE TIMING COVER AND PULLING THE DISTRIBUTOR PLUG TO DROP IN THE DIST. TO ACONVENTIONAL SETUP.THERE IS A DIFFERENT INTAKE THAT I AM AWARE OF ALSO FROM GM FOR THIS SETUP.  THE COOLING SYSTEM IS PRETTY WILD,DOES THIS MOTOR NEED A SPECIAL RADIATOR? REVERSE COOL AND ALL. THE WATER LINE AT THE REAR OF THE HEADS THAT WENT TO THE THROTLE BODY FOR WARMING AND COLD STARTS, CAN THE BE PLUGGED OFF OR WILL IT CAUSE HOT SPOTS? DOES ANYONE KNOW OF A WEBSITE THAT DEALS WITH THIS TYPE OF CONVERSION? I CANT FIND ONE.ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED THANXS.

Let’s start at the intake you’re looking for GMPP part number 24502592 this should cost about 240 dollars. The front cover plug is GMPP 12367600 for about 50 dollars.

The cooling insofar as the radiator is concerned does not require anything special. That end of the cooling system doesn’t know anything about the engine’s weird pumping priorities it only deals in transferring BTUs from the coolant to the air. If you go with aluminum a 1 to 1.25 inch wide tube with two rows should be sufficient, or a 3-4 tube core in a brass/copper radiator. The vent lines from the front and rear of the heads can be plugged, but it’s a better idea to gather them together in a fitting or pair of fittings with a small valve so they can be used to as an air bleed when filling the cooling system.

You can terminate the engine oil cooler if this is simply driven on the street. If you decide to run an external oil cooler, it’s a very good idea to include a thermostatic valve in the system to prevent over cooling the oil especially in cool/cold weather, Perma-Cool has them for about 50-60 dollars with the installation kit.

There is no provision for manifold heat either from the exhaust or hot water. This is a real problem for a carbureted or TBI’ed street driven engine. This will be a real pain in the butt when the engine is cold, especially if you don’t live in a warm climate state. this can be overcome a bit by using a factory air cleaner from carb or TBI equipped engine with the hot stove off the exhaust manifold to preheat the incoming air  if cool/cold/wet ambient air temps are a problem. These come with a thermostatically controlled door that cuts off the heated air when the engine warms up. This combined with a cool air source from behind the grill and a K&N replacement filter will provide plenty of intake air.
